This Coin dated 1849R Anno IV is listed as rare and un-priced in KM. Previous editions (1991)do not list it as rare. I have seen several offered over the years to consider it rare. Am I wrong or did KM goof. This one is from my collection.

Don't know which edition of Krause you use and what the latest edition says, in the Centennial Edition (copyright 1991) it has the mintage as 1,080,000, the second highest after 1846/I, so there must be a goof up somewhere.

Had a quick check and it seems there is a rare 1849B there and also a variety of the 1849R.

Yes, there looks to be an utterly ridiculous listing on ebay atm.

"Rare": a word used by ebay sellers in the belief it will sell their coin faster and for a higher price. In actual fact its use in that fashion drives collectors' nuts.

A google on "1849 IVR baiocco sale" gives 2,420 hits. Just how rare can it be?

I disagree, all indications are that this is in fact a low (or unknown) mintage. My catalog lists it as rare, as does NGC. The mezzo baiocco (1/2) is more common, and a Google search will include those. This does not mean it is worth a lot, but there are not a lot of examples out there. I have only spent a few minutes on this, so correct me if I'm wrong.

I can assure you from experience that this is common coin. They are somewhat scarce in mint state, but even then are not very hard to find, especially on the European market. The coin posted here would do $40-$50 because it's in nice condition and these are pretty popular coins. I've sold at least three in this grade or better in the last 5 years, and a few lower grade ones that I threw in with small lots of other Vatican coins.
NGC value guide is powered by Numismaster, which imports all it's data from the Krause books. A goof-up in the notoriously badly edited Krause will end up in the other two as well.

I stand corrected. The Italian Red Book lists it as common with a mintage of 1,079,500.
