I believe its Iran from the Shah days pre revolution.

Not a coin as far as I know (please show the reverse side as well).
It is definitely from Iran and the date on it is 1263 which would be the standard Hejira dating rather than the sun hejira dating commonly used in Iran. The portrait on the obverse is similar to the one on a commemorative 2000 Rials (which does not have any inscription).

The date is actually "1342" in Iranian numerals, which is in the Iranian Solar calendar; it converts to AD 1963.

Yes, I made a Freudian slip and typing mistake because a date of "1362' did not make sense in either normal or sun Hejira to me. You are right though, it's not a "6" as which I read it but a Persian "4".

There were some reforms in Iran in 1963, so this medal/medallion might have something to do with that, but would need to see the other side to make a better guess.
