I need a second opinion on this. I recently bought a 1974 uncirculated Eisenhower silver dollar off of ebay to fill one of the holes in my album. This is the first time I bought one of the silver ones. I went ahead and bought one in original packaging since it was the same price as an opened one and so it would have less chance of being damaged. Now that I see it in person, the packaging is in good shape and even includes the original paper inserts. My question is, should I go ahead and cut it out of the plastic to put it in my album or keep it sealed. I kind of feel guilty being the one to open it after it has been sealed for 40 years, especially if there are not many out there left intact.
Rest in Peace

Oh, I know that feeling.

I think it would be easier to sell it if it is in its original package. But that means you need to get one that's been liberated for your album.

It's your coin and I know that other people break the coins out of the packages and slabs but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it yet.

Shown below is part of my Susan B. Anthony folder. I got the two in proof packaging and so far have left them that way, even though it does look a little 'wacky' to me. I've also got one of my Eisenhower dollars taped to my folder the same way, but still have the 5 I've got in plastic boxes 'unattached' to the folder and am just storing them in a box somewhere.

As stated before, just do WHAT YOU WANT to do with any of your coins. There are so many different ways to store your coins (heck, some people just walk around with them in their front pants pockets), and as far as I know there aren't any 'rules' for coin collecting. Whatever you chose will be ok; until you change your mind some day!

I have lots of silver Ike's. I have recently removed all of them from their original packaging and put them in Lighthouse Quadrum holders. I did this initially because I was running out of storage space. The coins are better protected in the Lighthouse holders and take less room to store. If I thought that I would ever sell any of my Ike's, I might rethink removing them, but I have no plans to sell them.

I have both. I have a whole set of Blue and Brown Ikes in OGP. Actually, more like 6or8 Brown boxers. I have also broke them out for my Danscos. Likely will do that agin in the future. BUT, I WILL keep at least one set in OGP.

To remove or not to remove, that is the question
wather it is nobler in the mind to suffer
YADA YADA

it is your coin, do as you see fit.

Now, having said that, I ask you "Did you buy the coin or did you buy the packaging?"
"Do you collect mint packages or the coins in them?"

As already stated, they're yours so do whatever feels right. That said, I remove all coins from 1960s & 70s packaging because of gassing issues with them. The 90% coins and the silver clad generally have been pretty stable, but the clad coins tend to get a green haze/film on them.

What will make you happier... filling a hole with a coin, or seeing a hole knowing that you have the coin elsewhere?

I opened all of mine and put the coins in the Dansco because that is what made me happy.

I love taking silver ikes out of their package.

If you get them for around melt, it doesn't hurt as much.

Yeah, now that I think about it, my new album seems like a much better place than a 40 year old envelope and plastic package. There's no shortage of sealed ones on the internet so one less won't make a difference anyway.

Well I used to feel the same way about taking coins out of the package but believe me there are more out there than you would even want to imagine. Take it out and put it in your album. You will be amazed how much better it will look and will wonder why you ever did such a thing.

P.S. I want to add if they are slabbed and graded that is a different story. I have albums that I bought coins slabbed and I keep the few I have in a box near the albums so I can look at them together.

I've seen a lot of yellow-green toned coins from that mint plastic. I'd remove it from the plastic. If it's valuable, get it graded. If not valuable, who cares about the 50 cents price differential between cello-sealed and raw coins in perfect condition?
