I've been off the forum for a bit but came back in time to be reminded to order the newly released nickel rolls. When I went on the US Mint web site, the Ocean in View nickel was listed as backordered. When I proceeded to place my order, the confirmation screen said the item was no longer available, and when I got my e-mail confirmation it stated that they were in stock. So...I guess it's anybody's guess as to if, how, and when I might receive them, eh? That's what I get for totally spacing off the Aug. 1 release date...

I think that most of the coin collectors have a 'throw your hands in the air' attitude when it comes to ordering from the Mint. During the first week of a new coin or coin set, their web site is totally unresponsive and the phone number advises you to call back. I have decided to either brave the frustrations of trying to buy something on the first day or take my chances on waiting until the rush is over.

I've pretty much stopped ordering stuff like this. I think most of the buying is speculative, with people hoping to buy a LOT of stuff to make the Mint run out, and then they can jack up the price on what they bought. I don't much care for that game. These offerings should be for collectors, not speculators hoarding large quantities.

"these offerings should be for collectors, not speculators hoarding large quantites"

The mint in Australia caused a stir when they issued a limited edition "special" mint mark dollar on a restricted basis. They advertised a limit of 5 coins per collector, then changed their mind to selling only two to a collector.
Most dealers got quite upset as they could not get stock for those collectors who regularly buy from them. The "Dealers allocation" sold out within minutes of release with rumors it was all bought by three companies. Things got worse when a couple dealers were offering the coin in lots of 100!. Lots of rumors of hoarding and the few dealers cornering the market.
The Mint got a lot of "new" customers. Such was the level of demand that problems arose with sales staff coping with the large demand of small orders, that they relaxed the limit to 20 per customer and sold out in hours.

Just about everyone complained how the mint handled the sale. You could buy the coin from the mint stand at a show for $2.75 and walk to a dealer at the show who was buying them for $10. Kids were having a good time running back and forth. The coin now sell between $20 & $30 dollars.

It had a limited mintage of 40,000 and a "special" "G" mint mark.
G for Gilipoli 1st world war memorial, but actually minted in Canberra Australia
