When you turn them back in do NOT under any circumstances put your account number on the paper roll(s). The bank redistributes them and the new owner can easily find out the bank routing number and has YOUR account number. Even worse if you put your name on the roll you turn in. My local bank has alerted me that this is a big fraud going around with a lot of identity thefts occurring from bank rolls with account numbers written on them.

That's why my bank as a free coin counter. Sure I subject some coins I don't like to possible wheel damage, but I get to keep all the Canadian quarters stuck to the magnet. Which I then pass as US quarters at Mcdonalds, the circle of life.

Why in the world would you put your account number on the rolls to begin with?

Quote: Why in the world would you put your account number on the rolls to begin with? Some banks say they require this when a member turns in a roll. I'd refuse to do it if mine ever asked for this.

I'm not too sure why you would do that... I know of people that put their phone number on it.

I have not ever had to do that. I have gotten rolls that I think had account info on them at one time. The tellers cross it out with a sharpie though.

As a bank teller, I do see people do this occasionally. I tell them not to, for this very reason.

Hard to believe people would do that. Why not add their SS#, bank name, PIN and mothers maiden name while they're at it? Sheesh

Banks used to require this back when the bank would actually count the coins in the roll. Knowing which customer turned the roll in allowed them credit or debit your account if your roll was over or short. Of course, this was from an era when inflation was lower and coinage had more value. Unless discovered at the time you turn the roll in, banks don't check rolls in the back room anymore. Which is why scammers short roll rolls and purposely slip foreign coins into the rolls now. If you happen to collect CWR in or around older retirement communities, you are likely to see rolls with account numbers, names, addresses, etc on them. Most of the tellers will cross them off with a sharpie to help protect that info.
