Scanners vary quite a bit. I had great luck with a really old scanner until it finally broke down, and modern scanners don't seem to be very good at coin imaging (at least the ones I have tried). Let me suggest you try using a camera with a built in macro. I have been using a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS for the last few years and it gives pretty decent results and you can buy them relatively cheap on
ebay (The IS model has the macro feature so you will want to make sure to be alert as to that). I've messed around with lighting (having spent a few hundred bucks on special lights and equipment) and have found that it was pretty much a waste of money. Pictures taken under natural lighting without flash seem to come out the best.
BTW the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS is a digital point and shoot and I like it for its easy use and features.
Hope this helps and welcome to the forums.
