I found this quarter with print marks in the nose. There are 5 marks in a straight row. I'm sorry for the quality of the photo but all I have is my ipad camera. I've seen other quarters with scratches (boogies) on the nose but I am unable to find pictures with these marks. The marks are indentations and a few look somewhat like letters. Does anyone have any info on this coin?

Thanks

Hello, and welcome.

From the picture, it looks like the marks are dents in then coin. If that is the case then it is mostly likely PMD (post-mint damage). Probably caused by a bored high school student hitting the edge of another coin on the nose, or a bottle cap, etc. As such it is not worth anything over face value.

These marks are too perfectly aligned to be hammered out by a person. One of the marks looks like the letter D with turned upside down but I can't seem to capture it clearly with my pathetic IPad camera.

Are coins struck by other coins common? I just found a post on another website with an error description like mine but no one responded.

No they aren't. They look like the reeds from another coin to me. One shot puts them all there.

Try taking another quarter and lining up the reeding on that coin with the dents in this one. I'm guessing they are going to line up. Marks like this are quite common.

You can see how this happens and why it is so common here:

Lots of coins hitting each other in the minting process. I hope this helps.

PMD like the first response stated. Remember...if something is indented on a coin it would have to be raised on the die. Knowing this would almost eliminate most types of errors. to the forum and happy hunting!

Looks like it took a hit from the reeded edge of another quarter. You frequently see this type of damage on half dollars and dollars (since they are heavier, they really leave a mark!)

Welcome to Coin Community!

I also agree it looks PMD (Post Mint Damage). Keep looking, errors are out there!
