What is up with this coin? Is it gunk? Looks like zebra stripes on it.

I've seen coins with the dark line from contact with a rubber band, I'd bet it layer on something textured that was rubber for a few years, maybe a drawer liner?

some old coin folders caused that effect, perhaps from the glue on the back of the hole's space

TreasHunt is right. I was given a handful of Mercs in a folder and the reverses on all 6-10 had striping on the back. Same with some older IHC I had been given. Such a shame.
