Found these at the last minute and won them on ebay a few minutes ago for much less than my maximum bid. No books with me at work so unable to do much research other than a value for a raw coin on J&M. They appear to be mint issue and the seller is offering the black case that goes with it at no extra cost other than quadrupling my shipping costs from $4.50 to $18 I'm assuming that these are sealed Mint issue coins, I've just never seen this packaging option, they are advertised as UNC - 1951 SWL, 1953 SWL and 1953 Full Water lines Are these PL coins? Do I want the "Black Case" to retain their value? Edited by lucv13 10/08/2014 02:37 am

Well I emailed the seller to have him send pictures of the black cases that these supposedly came in, hopefully that will help with their origin...

These are department store or other aftermarket packages. The RCM NEVER used black dollar cases until the 1971 BC Silver 50 per cent DOLLAR issue. Your coins are plain ole regular issue silver dollars.

Agreed with both above. regular issue, after market cases. You do not want the cases shipped, postage will kill you. As for value retention or perhaps an increase in the future? it is whatever silver will do. Unless the coins are high grades. perhaps you might want to check the 1951 a bit closer. Sometimes SWL is mistaken for ARN. can you post better Photos of the 1951 reverse?

Thanks for the crushing news and brutal honesty Pacificoin LOL. (this is sarcasm, I do appreciate the response) On a more serious note I'm still waiting to hear from the seller regarding a "Black Case" There is nothing in the auction that is misleading or indicates that this was released as is from RCM those were simply my disillusions. The sale only indicates that the coins are UNC and if I wanted "the Black Case" included to let him know. I bid accordingly - was willing to go $20 per coin but got them for just under $15 per coin ($40.99). Actual photos upon receipt.

That's a decent price if you like the aftermarket packaging. I once saw an old poured Engelhard silver bar go for above moon money because it was still in sealed plastic with a department store label on it. Circa 1960s-1970 if I recall correctly.

If you only paid $40.00 for the coins, you did well. The 51SWL is worth that by itself. No need for the black cases. They probably are not worth the shipping cost. I would just leave them in the existing packaging because it's different and not something you often see.

Well it's not an ARN but all 3 are definitely MS-60 or better, I'll try to get some better pics when I get home in the morning, not sure how they'll turn out with the plastic though. If they're better than the ones I have in my display then I'll remove the plastic
