Hi Beckie,

Your coin would probably grade Fine-12 for details, or maybe a bit better. However, it has suffered a harsh cleaning which has destroyed most of its collector value. I would recommend that you not purchase any more coins like this!

Your nickel has an unnatural bright shine which is obviously out of place on a circulated coin. It also has many fine, swirly scratches over the whole surface. These scratches are called hairlines and they are the typical sign of a harsh cleaning. For comparison, here is a 1919-D nickel graded AU-50 by third-party grading company ICG. It has an original greyish color which is pretty typical for buffalos. Note that this coin is hairline-free.

It is important that collectors be able to identify coins that have been cleaned. It's OK to include cleaned coins in your collection, but you need to recognize the cleaning, before you buy it! Cleaned coins should cost much less than coins with original surfaces.

Good luck with your collection. I hope you track down some nicer coins, and please post them if you do!

Becky: I'm more cautious about saying your coin has been cleaned. The quality of the lighting and the size of your pictures make it difficult to see what this coin "really" looks like in hand. I see "hot spots" on the central devices where the light is brightest and reflecting into the camera. As a result, that part of the picture is over-exposed, and the flatter fields tend to be under-exposed. Both exposures can exagerate some flaws and hide others.

Please don't get discouraged! But maybe you have a friend or someone from whom you can borrow a better camera or who has more experience in macro photography. If so, you can give us better pics and we can give you better advice.

Best wishes!
