Spot on Trout, worst thing they could do is try to monopolise on it , with 2million minted and being sold at 100 percent mark up good chance they wont sell half of them.
Bad move and takes the fun out of getting change.
People are sick to death of scams and to do this is just a scam on collectors to get double the value for a coin.
And not only this it will also make it hard for those collectors to get any value for the coins as 2 million uncirculated mint condition coins are a lot of competition. Will self destroy its value. In circulation many end up un collectable and the survivors are what the collector wants and PAYS for they don't pay much for a common worn out tired coin. And they wont pay much for one that is readily available for a couple of bucks.

Quote: 2 million uncirculated mint condition coins are a lot of competition. I can't find it now, but I'm sure I read somewhere that these coins were being minted in the 'circulation' presses, so if that's the case, there probably won't be any nice ones to be found, they'll all be pretty well knocked around. I hope I'm wrong!

Found it! Quote: The coins will be of circulating coin finish and no discussion will be entered into if the coins you receive are not of uncirculated standard. Coins under discussion were the ones for the recent Sydney ANDA show, 2nd last bulleted point at the bottom of the page here: http://www.ramint.gov.au/media/noti...20141007.cfm Don't know if the same goes for all 2 Million coins being minted.

Quote: People are sick to death of scams and to do this is just a scam on collectors to get double the value for a coin. Exactly, the exact opposite of what should be happening. Stamp collecting is in decline, some say an ever increasing downward spiral, and despite ebay creating interest its just not cool with young folk,i think Coin collecting will follow as us over "60's" fade away.

There will always be coin collectors, just some keep them longer than others.

Enlil there might always be collectors the point is will there be enough to sustain the value. If in 20 years time which isn't that long there is half the collectors what do you think that will do to peoples investments in this category.
Unfortunately like most things we are interested in (our generation) most of the new Gen are not. This will have a devastating effect on coin collecting as it will most other collectables.
Seen it with many other items antiques are a classic for this happening. What one gen thinks is cool the next may very well not. Coins will be no exception.

Can you imagine what collectors were saying during the Great Depression.
On a piece of writing BC was noted that this next generation is not going to be anywhere as good as this one. These new kids just do not understand....

KG5 , Yes but we never had such a selection that this gen has , It has already shown in auction houses where the next collectables will be , Atari play station Nintendo xbox etc the old consoles and games are already selling to the next gen for quite handsome figures as stamps and coins slide down the ladder. And furniture also shows with 1920 and before way down and 1960s 70s taking of as the young remember what they were bought up with.
Petroliana is another hot item at the moment but that will not be the case with the next gen they have been brain washed to be GREEN and hate all things oil.
Same thing different product. Will it end coin collecting probably not but it will have an effect that is a guarantee.

Who knows what the future holds but the Smart Phone/I-Pad generation have no interest in Coin/Stamp collecting which will have major effects in the years ahead, add the fact there are hardly any Stamp/Coin Shop fronts left and the influx of Asian fakes I can see,as far as coins go,a downward decline in rare coin prices.Of course Gold/Silver coins will always have a Bullion value in the years ahead and this is the area many Pro.'s and casual collectors are concentrating on even now.My personal view on the subject.

Well.... I am a coin collector only because of the silver being the make up of the coin.
After about 2 years with silver coins Key Dates coins made of other metals are starting to look attractive to me. Even to the point of new releases in rolls?!
But when it come to collectables that have been made in say the last 5 years and value Australia Used high values or high denominations stamps are selling big time and the stand out is used self adhesive Australia international Post stamps that are selling for amazing prices because there is not enough to go around.
I could say a lot more but this is a coin forum. lol

The words 'dead cat' & 'bounce' spring to mind with people talking up the overall condition of stamp collecting as far as sales go,lots of offloading going according to my local dealer,he feels it,as a hobby at least, slowly fade over the next 20 years to a point of no return with only the elite stamps having a market. Anyway who knows what the future holds, all we can do is speculate what might/may happen.

I really enjoy speaking to the 100s of new stamp collector I come into contact with each year. Some very specialised stamping threads I have put together have high amount of visitors. But true who knows! It is hard to find someone that has not collected coins from there change. ebay has killed the bricks and mortar stamp & coin shops. A couple come to mind that sold trash for decades and now.....

ebay may have killed the bricks and mortar shops but with ebay the freebay,s new policies there may well be room to now open up a bricks and mortar stamp and coin shop. Have you seen how many are going to leave ebay with there new policies and not just here in OZ but the states as well. 1st November (tomorrow) it all starts 6 months to hold on your money and returns can be sent back up to 6 months after you purchase it. Don't think it will work to well for home sellers. EEBAY the big new Amazon or so they wanna be. Over all though I think its all just time, time will tell the true story of everything.

Yep on the 18th Nov ebay will be bringing in a situation that people selling electrical good for example will now have to give a 6 month warranty. And No eBay/paypal is not going to keep my funds locked up for 6 month before I can use them. They already can keep funds for 3 months and forever as long as they like! They will not be able to give me back my sold items without damage after 6 months.
