since were going up to the year 1600 in this forum now, I thought I'd share a few of my Russian wire coins. I have a few that are post 1600 that I will not display here, but they are made exactly the same way and look pretty similar. they were made from cut pieces of wire, and hammered (not milled) on dies that were somewhat large, so you almost never see all of the details on any one coin. these were made from the late 1400s to about 1700, peter the great was the last one to use the type. these are both from ivan the terrible. this coin when he was grand prince of Moscow... Ivan IV ar wire denga 1535-1547 O: horseman holding a sabre r: reads "grand prince ivan" Moscow mint 10x13 mm 0.5g this coin was struck (I think) the year he became the first tsar of Russia.. Ivan IV denga 1547 O: horseman holding a sabre, the mint engraver's mark "- "Е", circular dotted line. R: cyrillic legend ("Czar and Grand Prince Ivan"), circular dotted line. 9x11mm 0.4 g Mint: Moscow Edited by chrsmat71 10/12/2014 11:47 pm

Those are nice pieces, got a couple somewhere as well. They have a clear and crisp designs, maybe the enlargements don't do them full justice. Can be difficult to identify them since as you said parts of the design might not be there.

I have one of these early dengas too (bought it thinking it was a kopek; I did eventually get a kopek of that period). Don't have any later dengas though (IIRC). By the way, 0.5 grams seems a bit large for a denga (the standard is 0.34g). What's the KG number for your coins, coincidentally? (sorry for huge bad photos, that was before I learned how to make decent ones)

thanks guys!
J1M, you're correct..that would be heavy..i didn't notice that. I get my dengas and kopeks mixed up, so a denga is a half kopek at 0.34g and a kopek is 0.68g. I weighed the coin again and got 0.4 g. I think the issue is my scale isn't sensitive enough, and is a cheap scale anyway. the next scale I get i'll make sure it weight to hundredths of a gram.
i don't know what "KG numbers" are. are they like KM numbers?

These coins look nice when they wear like that. It is cool to see a horse on a coin too.
