If they come out with a new VDB "commemorative", or some type of coin in 2009 to celebrate the 100 mark of the Victor D Brenner design (also Abe's 200th Birthday), I'll have a pretty decent set started. Otherwise I at least have the Victor Brenner duo.

At first for my Lincoln set I only wanted to have the nice, certified examples of the Dansco keys... the SVDB and the 22 Plain. But in light of 2009 coming up, the philly VDB has being going up like crazy. I figured why not get a nice example of both. The rest of my Lincoln set is all going to be XF-AU, with the more expensive semi-keys being Fine.

So here's the coin I won, along with some communication with the seller. He seems like a stand-up guy.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...320151313945

First I PM'd him and asked for the reserve price, which was $250

ME: Often "red" coins can actually begin to tone inside the slab. In the pictures you provide it actually looks like a nice piece, but I can't tell for sure if the dark areas are just shadows from the light or the copper beginning to tone. Do you have any pictures with better lighting? If not, could you accurately describe if it is, in fact, 100% red?

HIM: It is 100% Red, No Toning. A perfect coin. Best I can do on the Pictures.
Thanks for Looking.

My next email: I'm interested in bidding on your coin, but since better pictures cannot be provided I can only bid if you'll extend the 3 day return policy to this coin. If the coin has no sign of toning or flaws, there would be no reason for me to return it. I recently purchased a $588 coin from harborcoin with a no return policy, but they had clear, well lit pictures. If you're unwilling to, then no love lost.

His Reply: No Problem, The coin is Perfect, And I understand your concerns, Print out this email. I will extend the Return Policy for you to 7 Days. And all you have to do is Email me that you want to return it within 7 days, and let me know, that your are mailing it back.

As much as I dislike slabbed coins, times like that make them worthwile. Without a slab I doubt he would be so easy on the return policy...

That is a nice VDB
I have a 64RD in an old PCGS rattler holder and it is still nice and red. It is one of my favorite coins since my wife purchased it for me as a total surprise and without any input from me. Not bad for someone who has limited knowledge of coins

Thanks, guys. If it's as nice as he says I'm going to submit it for a crossover to PCGS. On Heritage I'm seeing recent PCGS MS66 examples sell for high $300 or even $400 that are average for the grade.

Why go thru the trouble of cracking it out paying the fes and hoping for a croosover. If the pcgs slab makes it worth the fees. There isn't that much of a difference in price.
It's a beautiful coin, It's in a TPG holder. I would just leave it. I have many NGC coins that are graded more accuratley than PCGS.

And...what if it comes back as a 65 or worse ?

Just food for thought.

Not to sound to negative but I think you should start looking into coin shows. I think that may be a nice coin but the photo sure is poor. I would never deal with someone with an almost impossilbe to see photo of a coin and in that price range. I also think it is a bit over priced. I've seen you really great deal on the 09S VDB but I think your getting carried away with internet purchases. One of two great deals does not a market make. Please look into some coin shows. Maybe where your at that is not possible, but I suggest you spend more time investigating prices, values, availability in coins. If the internet is your only source for coins, I would suggest you start a list of reputable on line dealers.
Just my opinion.

PCGS offers a crossover service, where you send them a certified coin from a competitor and if they agree with the grade THEN they crack it out and reslab it. Otherwise they leave it in the original slab.

But it is in a TPG HOLDER.You are willing to pay the fees on a coin that may or may not crossover. If this were a key date or a rare coin that you thought had a good shot at a upgrade then fine. but your only talking about the POSSIBILITY of the sale of a coin in a PCGS SLAB..
Ex : if this were a 14d that was a 63 or 64 and thought it would make 65, the price difference is huge.

This is a true case of "buy the coin ,not the plastic"

Yep. If the coin turns out to be as PQ as he claims (and he backed it), a small nominal fee for a good chance to be in a PCGS holder is well worth it. Aside from the fact PCGS MS66's are selling for way more than I paid, I much prefer the appearance of their holder over NGC.

The coin looks greats(at least from what I can tell from the pics). The coin probably is red if the seller is doing all of that. Post pics when you get it. Congrads!

chrsb, nice color and detail, slight toning started (high-end red & brown IMO). A little bit of spotting. I think you got a nice deal but I definitely wouldn't call it a 66 Red.

USArmy,

I was not comparing mine to the one you bought, I was just suggesting that people check out all the options in buying coins. I understand some people do not have coin shows every weekend like I do here. Some people do not even have an reputable coin dealer near them. It was not my intention to offend you on your purchase, I personally do not like it when people on the boards tell people they made an bad purchase unless they ask, I figure people should not post what they paid for something unless they are prepared for someone to jump in and say they got riped off or got a great deal. I guess thats all part of a public forum.

chrsb,

Oh, I didn't take offense. But I appreciate you clarifying. I was more or less making the point that in the MS realm price jumps from grade to grade can be enormous.

I've only been to one coin show but I would LOVE to go to more. I picked up a really nice PCGS large cent at the one I went to. To me coin shows are fantastic for the overall experience, and to browse around for coins. But if you have a very specific coin in mind, anytime and anywhere the internet is a God sent IMO. You don't know how many times I've called around to every dealer in town, "Do you have a certified MS blah-blah in stock? You do? Finally! You want how much? LOL ok thank you"

Edit: Gore sent
