Is doubling considered an error, or is it also considered as a form of mint damage?
In other words, is there a difference between those two terms?

This coins life: As a blank- "Yay I'm about to be struck!" During the strike- "Yes, man does Lincoln looks good on me or what." Then "OOOOOWWWWWWW!" (that was the MD).

And to answer petersun's question, MD happens during the strike, and double dies happen on the die.

NICE example of Mechanical Doubling.
Well worth keeping even if it isn't a DDO.

Machine damaged example. When you see it on the outside edge of the bust/Memorial/shield or the central design, then it is usually always caused by the machine damaged the devices.
