Heya folks! Not sure where to put this in the forums, so if it needs to be moved, no worries. Anyhow... I pulled this guy from a bezel today, and was hoping to get a little info on it. An internet search doesn't turn up much other than it may have some rarity to it. Any info is greatly appreciated!

It's a privately made 1/20th oz gold round worth melt. Doesn't matter too much if it has some rarity to it because the only thing rarer is a collector specializing in them. I thought it might have been a product of the Royal Hawaiian Mint, a private mint that has been around since 1974, but it doesn't appear in their production line.

I did a search on Hawaiian Save The Dolphin Gold coin and came away with the feeling the coin was made by the Royal Hawaiian Mint. As is mentioned in the following article. The coin in this article appears to match your presentation, only you can say if the two are alike or not. However it appears to me that they are.

The Royal Hawaiian Mint appears to have been in operation since 1974 but the coin mentioned in the first article is not shown on their pages. If the coin was indeed minted by the Royal Hawaiian Mint it almost appears to be something that was made for the Hawaiian tourist trade.

Bases on these articles and others that I've found it appears that your coin is gilded and values minimally. Based upon what I've seen the coin is good looking but with little numismatic value as well a little precious metal value.

The initial article did provide some interest in the coin, but further reading into the mint did leave me with some confusion and so on my part I would leave the coin alone or as a jewelry trinket for my wife.

For your sake I do hope that my reading of articles is wrong and you do have a find of a lifetime.

Edit: I do agree with what Conder101 says. But do add that it might have been better suited if you had left it in a jewelry setting.

Thanks for the response guys! I was hoping there would be some sort of numismatic value, but figured otherwise.... ebay will have to decide lol. It is definitely gold, not gilded so it's worth at least the metal. Hopefully there's enough interest on ebay to keep this pretty (at least the obverse) coin from the melt bucket. javascript:insertsmilie('')

I contacted the Royal Hawaiian Mint about this piece for you.

Here's what the rep said in the email:

Quote:
We issued this coin along with one of our collectors We were in support of Greenpeace and other organizations trying to save not only the dolphin but also the ocean. As you can see on the reverse, it weighs 1/20 oz. of .9999 fine gold. We issued approximately 100.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Wow..collector bashing. Hawaii State Numismatic Association has a very large membership. I specialize in Hawaiiana numismatics. That specimen was struck as a jewelry piece. If it did not have bezel damage, it would fetch a price above melt value. You may get some high bidding on ebay as the Kaiulani design is one of the most desired designs. Most of the Royal Hawaiian Mint coins have acquired major listing in several of the Krause World coin catalogs. They are also listed in NGC world price guide.

By the way..Thank you for listing my blog...I am The Hawaiiana Numismatist...

I'll make a special write-up for this coin after work today.. you can reference it in your ebay ad...

Since we are on the topic of bashing Hawaii collectors...Google Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals...A Hawaii collector (me) uncovered a US Mint series of 17 medals that has been hidden for over 5 decades. Discussion to list 10 of these medals as so called dollars has begun. It all began wits an incomplete listing in the Medcalf & Russell Hawaii Money catalog. A Numismatic News article was submitted and accepted for publication.

1997 Princess Victoria Kaiulani 1/20 gold coin. Unlisted in the Royal Hawaiian Mint Catalog (Waifs in Gold Boots). Save the Dolphin design in similar to 1994 Save the Dolphin Pattern in 1/10 oz platinum (only 3 struck). (Also not to be confused with 1994 Save the Ocean 1/20 gold issue in which 225 were struck). Obverse features the iconic design of Princess Kailulani (similar to the rare Reginald Huuth medals struck in 1895). Reverse is the upright dolphin design which features a large head dolphin. This is only one of three Royal Hawaiian Mint coins with the upright Dolphin design. This is a rarity itself for Princess Kaiulani coin collectors. Approximately 100 specimens were struck. This is an ex-jewelry piece.(please credit The Hawaiiana Numismatist as the author - may get strong bidding for the research provided by a known Hawaiiana numismatist).

Attached is a related Princess Kaiulani 1 oz gold. Current catalog valuation was based in 2011 spot gold ($1500/oz). Therefore, numismatic value was $450 above spot gold (~30%).

This is an uncirculated struck specimen (1 on reverse is the identifier). Frosted cameo with proof fields. Only 55 were struck.

I would start the 1/20 oz. bidding at $75 to draw in more active bidding from collectors and/or bullion buyers.
