I ended buying 10 proof sets for $2.50 apiece. 8- 1981, 1- 1980, 1-1982 at my local pawn shop. Originally he wanted 2.88 apiece but I asked if he would reduce the price if I bought all 10. He considered these sets damaged since they didn't have the mint sleeves stands or paper work. One set has cracks in it and a few other has minor scratches but in general beautiful shape. He had over sixty mint sets in but most was at RedBook values. I think someone's collection was liquated since he usually only has one or two coins. He generally way over prices or under values the coins in the shop so it's fun to check in. I knew there was a tiny chance I could find type 2 coins from 1981 and I needed about six for my Dansco too. Since face value was already 18.10 I didnt see it as much of a gamble. That being said I don't need the extras and plan on selling them. What's the best way of reselling them on ebay, this site, or to a dealer? Would I get more money selling them loose in 2x2s since the cases have cracks and stratches? What sort of offer should I expect from a dealer compared to if I sell them myself. Did I get a good deal on them? I will post some pictures of them later tonight. On a side note I almost got three 40% halves at 5.30 with their plastic tube. He's partner came in and stopped him and told him it was apiece. I kindly declined to buy them at that point, maybe if silver hits $40 a ounce haha.

Ok checked all the 1981 coins with a 16x loupe definitely looks all to be type I. I will definitely recheck them before doing anything with them.

From a reselling point of view you are going to have a tough time making much money. On ebay they average about 5 bucks each, but after shipping, fees, and time not much meat left. I don't know how much you could get breaking apart, but you could probably get more, but you would also probably have to mail to more different people so may not be worth it. I think a dealer would give you pretty close to what you paid if they wanted the, but I suspect a lot of dealers have plenty of these and would not be interested. If you needed these coins for some sets then it is not a bad buy, and the first thing I thought of when I read you got 1981 was check for type 2's. I probably would have checked for type 2's in the shop and only bought them if they had any, but I always wear my loup. If I didn't have a loup with me I would have bought them like you did just to make sure I didn't miss out on a type to SBA.

Yeah it was a impulse buy and I probally shouldn't had done it haha. I figured I could break even and still get the coins I want out of it. I will keep three sets and slowly sell and trade the 2x2s to dealers slowly. The cases are pretty scratched up so I doubt they want it whole.
How would you guys sell it to dealers? In the damage cases or apart? Most of the coins are really up there in grade while the cases are missing their mint stuff and are scratched.
On any given month I visit like 10 dealers so hopefully I can pass them off or trade them; it helps that the person I'm dating loves coins too. Atleast I got all the time in the world to liquate them. I would totally not mind trading the proof coins I need for my album.
I'm definitely using the treasury token as a pocket piece to wear it down. :) I will also keep people posted on if I am able to sale them and at what profit..

if you manage to find a complete set that is all type II, then you do alright. I have a 1981 type I and type II set in OGP..

You only spent $7 over face for everything... I doubt you are going to find a cost effective manner of selling this stuff. Maybe let the rest go at a local coin club auction? IMO, you should just spend the extras after you keep what you actually needed.

I think I'm going to try ebay since I've been wanting to try out selling something low risk. I don't want to try to sell the sets as is because of the scratches to the cases and lack of paperwork and a buyer being confused by not reading the auction clearly. If I repackage the nicest kennedy proof I have and offer it for .99 cents beginning reserve auction and a nominal shipping, do you think I would have any interest/ bids? If I can get 2x face on most of my coins I would be happy? Any one have a general idea of what it would take to ship a single coin in the US domestically?

I want to say first class would be around $2.37 with tracking. Sometimes it depends though. At my small town post office it is close to that, but at a bigger post office I went to they would ring it up differently and it would only be like $1.49. I never have tried to figure out the difference because honestly like most Americans I don't care about that small amount difference and it is still cheaper than driving it to wherever myself. Hope that helps.

If those were mine I'd break them all out and put them in Albums. Left overs would go in 2x2's for possible future usage.

I'm definitely keeping a 1980', 1981, 1982 set for self and my albums. I just knew I was buying so little over face that I got excited.

Ok I was able to finially make a deal for my remainder with a dealer. No dealers would buy them for me but I finially asked one for a trade and he accepted after negotiations. I got one well worn 1922 d Peace dollar and a 1946 unc Booker T. Washington half that I been wanting for my 7070. He was selling them for a combined $42 so I think I did ok. I also kept the highest grade coins I needed from the 10 sets I broke up; 3 halves, three dimes, Three Cents, two SBA, and the 1982 token. I will post pics when I get home tomorrow.

Yeah I was so tired at looking at them and hated tying up my money in the proofs since I have limited funds. It was a fun experience but I was afraid of the proofs being impaired since how I bought them and having to break them out. Used gloves but was still scared they might start showing finger prints or toning. He's going to sell them in the album I was displaying them in as a lot for his flea market stall. It was a cheap $5 album from Whitman that I later found out had PVC. The album was the key between a nice common Peace dollar with $5 or a worn Peace dollar and the half. The worn one was G the same as the Morgan dollar I have so I was pleased with it.
