Is there a 2013 Lucky Loonie? This article claims that the 2013 lucky loonie has a mintage of 969,000; but I can't seem to find this coin. Is this a typo. With such a low mintage this certainly caught my attention, but, where did this mintage number come from. Can anyone clear this up. http://canadiancoinnews.com/recent-...ntage-coins/

That's really strange, I don't recall the RCM ever making a 2013 lucky loonie. If they did, they would have sold them in packs of 5 like they did for the 2012 and 2014 years. Also, there were no Olympics going on during 2013 so it makes no sense to make a lucky loonie that year. Maybe they are referring to the 2014 lucky loonie but got the dates wrong?

I don't have any and I poked around the net for awhile with no success finding one. Odds are this was a type error. If anyone has one a picture would be great. Liverpool

I've often wondered about this myself. 2013 wasn't an Olympic year, it's not listed in CCN's Trends, and I've never come across it on ebay. If you check the RCM's annual report for 2013, they list 967,000 loonies released in 2013 but dated 2014 (pg. 84). Further down, on pg. 95, there are 967,000 Lucky Loonies, released in 2013. I think it's safe to assume that these are the same coins - 2014 Lucky Loonies released in 2013 to ensure that they were in general circulation in time for the Sochi Winter Games.

They state a mintage of "The lucky loonie struck in 2013 had it lowest mintage ever, just 969,000". I have no idea, this is erroneous. Wikipedia has the mintage of the 2012 Lucky Loonie at 5,000,000 but no reference. J&M says 2012 Lucky Loonie mintage was 5,000,000. Can't be 2014, it is not over yet, can't report on numbers that are not final. For the Canadian Coin News to make this error makes me question the credibility of the site/author.

BANFF, ALBERTA - January 11, 2014 - The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to issue Canada's latest commemorative circulation coin, the 2014 Lucky Loonie. Five million 2014 Lucky Loonies have been produced and will enter into circulation on January 20th. So if they had to be ready for January 2014 then they must have been produced in 2013 with a 2014 date. I agree with you lyradnoj. Still no such thing as a Lucky Loonie with a 2013 date, the article is misleading by not noting that the coins have a 2014 date and that there is no difference between those 969,000 and the rest of the 4,031,000 minted in 2014.

Oh wow. I think the mint report should have been a bit more specific about the dates.

A "lucky" Loonie is any you find on the ground, or for that matter, any coin you find.

The questions I'm left with is where did they get that number (969000)? The 2012 lucky loon was for the summer Olympics and the 2014 were for the winter so it makes absolutely no sense to have a 2013 lucky loon. Is the number a fabrication or is there a discrepancy in exactly how many were released in 2012? Was the balance released in 2013? Maybe someone has a bit of insight as to where they gleaned the 969000?

Due to production timelines (and the quantity of overall coins minted at the RCM), the most likely scenario is what SilverDon and lyradnoj say. With the early release of the coins in January 2014, they would have needed to start production in late 2013 for the 2014 Lucky Loon
