This piece is a base metal token. You can tell by all the text below the coat of arms on the reverse. The real 1967 $20 gold proof does not have that text.

This piece was released the same time as the Sudbury "big nickel" and "big penny" pieces, as part of Sudbury's numismatic park. (the seller's story about the mint putting these in 1967 Specimen sets is horse-pucky)...

It is a tricky piece of exonumia... based on the history of ill-intending people trying to pass them as real...

On the ebay listing, it states:
"In 1967 when the Royal Canadian Mint issued the mint sets with the $20 gold coins, they substituted these for the regular coins in all sets that were shipped into the United States."

Is this true? I don't think the RCM even made these.

Weren't these given out at the "The Big Nickel" tourist attraction in Sudbury? There's a giant penny and nickel version of these tokens.

I don't believe so. Like you said, it wasn't the RCM who made them. I've also seen both pieces in hand, I seem to recall that the plated token had a larger diameter so it wouldn't fit in the hole designed for the $20 gold piece.

They did indeed remove the gold coin before shipping to the United States, since it was still illegal for American citizens to own gold in 1967. There was also a similar 1967 Specimen set with a larger size sterling silver medal instead of the $20 gold piece.

I contacted the seller, and he was very quick to respond. I asked if he was aware that his story was incorrect and misleading. To which he promptly responded that he was not, and asked for more info. I gave him the info. He just messaged me back. He said that he is going to adjust the auction.....I assume that he will have to end the auction, and relist with the proper info.

He's been 'nice' to you but very abrupt to me.
He's re-listed it but hasn't changed anything.
Still calling it a "gold coin".

seller ended and relisted. He also noted that this is not a gold coin in his description.

I stand corrected.

The seller does describe the coin as 'not gold'.

I understand that these were issued by a private mint/company but how can they put a face value on it. Who's to say I wanted to take this to the bank.
