Within a 30 mile radius of my house there are 8 coin shops (although several of them are owned by the same people), not including pawn shops or we buy gold type establishments.
How many coin shops are there in your area?

2 stand-alone shops, and 1-2 inside shopping malls EDIT - those are the ones I know of, they may be more  |

Maybe 15-20 or more. I do live in a city with a metropolitan population of 1,000,000 people though. Only half are quality, and half charge $5-$50 more than the coin's value.

Within a half hour drive from my house or my friend around 20. Less than a mile from my house one full service and two estate buyers/sellers who have a decent assortment of coins. I live in indianapolis so it's a big city.

Probably 6 or 7 or so good ones, within an hour's travel. Three of those have a very high international reputation, with a combined international public auction business of around $10 to $20 million turnover per year.
View days are always an event for me.
Cheap fo me to get to at least, on public transport for only $2.50 for a return trip. Just think of that: no parking fees!
And I get to read my copy of the Australian Numismatic Journal while I am travelling.
My way of enjoying a very indulgent numismatic day out.

Only one that I know of - the rest appear to be "we buy gold" places on Google maps. The only one within walking distance anyway. I don't want to spend $3 on the subway to go there and $3 more to go back.
I can be pretty cheap on transport if I want to. I'd rather walk for 30-40 minutes than pay for a $2 bus fare.

We have lots of "we buy gold and silver" shops here. They also buy silver coins as bullion and so not sell them. Only one coin shop. Good owner.

Pretty much none. One that does modern bullion type stuff 20 minutes away, after that .. London. All my purchases are via the internet. Last coin I bought had to come nearly 400 miles from a shop in Scotland. The UK doesn't seem to have many local coin shops in my experience.  Edited by Tom Goodheart

There aren't any close to where I live. It's unfortunate, but coin collecting just isn't a very popular hobby in the UK. It's not like America.
So, I buy all my stuff online.

By your measure of ~50km 'Joe2007', there are just a handful where I live and none of them has a good selection.

Within 30 miles there are 2 jewelry stores with coin sections, small amount of coins and all overpriced. Within 50 miles 2 pawn shops, highly overpriced, they were selling common wheat cents for $2.00 each, I said I have a 1,000 wheats to sell how much do you pay, 2 cents each was the answer, 90 miles away there is 1 professional that has been in business for at least 30 years, sometimes a bargain can be had but not often, I buy a few off of the internet but mostly buy at the Whitman expo in Baltimore 3 times a year, 200 miles away it would be nice to have
one good shop under 30 miles but I don't see it happening

Within 30 miles is slim pickings for me. There are no coin shops but a few jewelry stores and antique malls that occasionally have coins or bullion for not too bad of a price. So I depend on the internet.

Zilch. The nearest is 45 minutes and not open evenings or weekends so I've never been inside the front door. I rely totally on the Internet as well.
