I got me a rose! CARIA, Islands off. Rhodes. Circa 350-300 BC. Æ 10mm (1.20 gm). Diademed head of Rhodos right, wearing earring and necklace / P-O, rose with bud to the right; uncertain symbol left. SNG Helsinki 384-392 var.; SNG Copenhagen 750-751 var.; BMC Caria pg. 238-239, 74ff var.; SNG von Aulock 2796-2797 var.; Laffaille 503 var. I think I have the right description. The uncertain symbol on left of my coin is Delta. I can't see a necklace on Rhodos, but there is a way to go cleaning yet.

That's a first for me. I've never seen flowers featured on the reverse of 'Ancients' before.
Opens up a whole new line. - Very Nice. P.P.

Quote: Thanks. Got his Roman one, will have to get the Greek. Which edition? (The Roman one that is.) If it is any but the 'Millennium Edition' you might have a nice item to add to your Christmas wish list. Not to forget his books on 'Greek Imperial' and on 'Byzantine Coins'. http://www.davidrsear.com/roman_coins.html(On the left side you'll see a list of his books for sale - but you might get them cheaper in the UK from a wholesaler or some even second hand.)

My JC has put paid to my Christmas and (January) Birthday presents. I had a look for Sears yesterday and the prices are too much for me at the moment. My Roman Sears is an old copy, definitely not the millenium version. I will keep my eyes open on ebay for something cheaper.

Had a quick look at Amazon and they offer the Greek Coins for $39 (vol.1) and $34.22 (vol.2), ie for secondhand ones. But you might want to inquire at one of the great second hand bookshops in London, if I recall right the world's best stocked one is in Charing Cross Road. But yes, until the 5th volume comes out one needs an older one to cover the whole Roman Empire - relying still on a 1975 copy for the later emperors, so don't even have the 1988 edition. Luckily for you there is a lot of online information now, when I started digging into ancients there was not such a luxury.

Pish great coin! A pleasing patina and an earlier Hibiscus style. I would like to share my didrachm. Monogram E. PODION Mine has a slight obverse die shift and an honest amount of wear. The reverse is why I bought the coin. The "rose" is protected by the incuse punch. Every ancient collector should strive for a nice Rhodes coin in their collection. Its one of the must have mints. Famous for its theamata, The Colossus of Rhodes. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, standing 280-226 BC. The Macedonians unsuccessfuly besieged the city in 305 BC. Rhodes AR Didrachm (6.64g) 387-304 BC Obverse: 3/4 facing head of Helios Reverse: PODION Grapevine and Hibiscus (ROSE) Monogram E ref: SG 5038
