I wanted to order my son-in-law silver eagles for Christmas. Which is better the 2014 MS 70, which is certified and first release, or a 2014 proof? The proof is prettier. Also why does it say in the Red Book a 2014 unc penny is worth .30? Thanks ahead of time. I knew someone could answer those questions here.

This is a matter of taste and preference, not which is "better".

I guess I should have said which would be more likely to increase in value. He buys a lot of coins and thinks he's going to sell them someday. I doubt if he ever does because he likes them to much.

moses, if you are looking solely at which has the better odds of having a good value increase, that would be the proof. All else being equal, proofs tend to have a higher premium. That being said, either one would make a great gift. RedBook is often high with their values. Perhaps one that would grade at MS68 or better could pull thirty cents. Maybe.

I'd get the proof. It's a more beautiful coin as you noted.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one, personally. Does your son-in-law go for graded coins?

Not really sure. He does like a lot of different coins.
Thanks so much for answering.

No problem and to CCF, by the way! If I were to get either for Christmas, I'd be thrilled!

Well, let's look at it. One coin has value wholly dependent on a subjective grade and provably-deceptive title applied by a for-profit company, and the other is the highest level of numismatic workmanship its' issuing country is capable of. Which am I going to pick?

Quote:Also why does it say in the Red Book a 2014 unc penny is worth .30? Dealer Nuisance Fee. The RedBook is supposedly a retail pricing guide, what you would have to pay a dealer for the coin. If a Dealers is going to acquire, package, inventory, and trak the sale of that 2014 cent, he is going to charge for the nuisance of having to do so. After all he has to make a cover his expenses for time, materials and make a profit. Hence the $0.30 price. Even at that the dealer probably really isn't making a profit. I know dealers in world coins where if they have to package it, identify, inventory etc, a coin it is a MINIMUM of $2 even if the coin lists for fifteen to twenty five cents in the catalog. And I don't blame them for doing so. Take all the prices shown in the RedBook with a grain of salt though. In many cases they bear no relationship to reality.
