Just saw this, and my first impression was that it looks WAY too clean, but NGC doesn't think so. Thoughts?

GSC is a scam. Don't ever buy from that seller. The coins that they sell my look good in the pics, but in real life you look at them and think . Most likely this is a fake slab.

Yeah, it's been cleaned but NGC deemed it market acceptable. To me it looks dipped and not abrasively (i.e. harshly) cleaned. Nevertheless I would call it improperly cleaned and/or discount the value significantly for the surfaces.

As noted this seller has a poor reputation. At least this coin is slabbed and it was sold on Heritage last summer for $305. http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-quar...Lot=1x=0&y=0

That's absolutely cleaned and definitely not market acceptable. I've seen a bunch of these before and I cringe every time. Then again GSC is a crappy seller and being that he is known for his photography that coin is probably doubly awful in hand.

Ho whoa whoa whoa here!!!! THAT is an awfully big accusation with nothing to back it other than you dont like that company.

Lets lay this where it belongs. AGAIN, Jesus (NGC) has once again messed up royally and slabbed a problem coin as something it is not. NGC NOT being the infallible powerhouse everyone says they are, this is another example of that.

THATS who needs to be bashed, not Great Southern.

I'm not ready to pronounce it cleaned just based on images from a seller I know to "juice" the images. Not that it *isn't* cleaned, but there's that chance with overlit digital imagery.

Maybe we can find other images of this coin somewhere. Oh, look! It sold on Heritage this summer:

Heritage's images are more encouraging. Proof it hasn't been cleaned? Nope, but encouraging.

There's also a photos on the NGC site.

I'm a novice at this, but I just can't believe there's not a speck of anything, dirt, tarnish, etc. on that coin after more than 150 years.

The Heritage pedigree and photos are encouraging. The NGC pictures look a bit more like the sellers.

Graders are not perfect hence grading is subjective and beauty is most certainly in the eye of the beholder. It's almost inconsequential, what any of us think of the coin, since we're not buying the coin. I doubt any of you, including myself, who would buy a slabbed coin from a TPG will shy away from dong business with NGC if a coin you desire shows up in one of their holders and fits the bill.

This coin should not the be the catalyst and springboard for the great debate of grading and TPG's. It's not that blatant and offensive. If anything, what I see, is a heavy duty slider that has enough surface marks to not have been called MS.

This illustrates just how important the technique and quality of the imagery is when making judgments regarding cleaning. Yes, we know it when we see it, but interpreting digital imagery is a whole 'nuther area of specialty which one must command before being able to form reliable opinions.

Sure looks cleaned to me. That goes for the images on ebay, HA, and NGC websites.

The Heritage images are over lit as well and it has a lot of scratches on the obverse fields as well. Yes it does appear to be cleaned and it is not a no problem coin. Looks to have 50 sharpness, cleaned, scratches in the fields, odd graininess of the surfaces, I'd probably net grade the coin as a 40 at best.

The slab and the coin are both real. When I looked at the seller's pics, it looked cleaned, when I looked at NGC's pics, it still looked cleaned. NGC has unfortunately messed up.

Far from a springboard. It is merely another in a LOOOOOOOOONG line of misgraded coins that have come from on high.
