Hi All

An 1868 Shield nickel. Most of the old silver coins in the collection have the dark coloring on the lower areas with the silver showing on the higher areas and I wonder if this would be considered a problem.

Thanks for you help!

That's perfectly normal. As a coin gets circulated, it gathers dirt on the field, and as the devices contininue to wear out, they continue to show the silver color. The contrast in color between the devices and field is often called "circulation cameo." They are attractive (at least to me).
BTW, that Shield nickel is 75% copper and 25% nickel.
Nice nickel

Thanks for the info Matteproof! I also like the contrast in the appearance of the coin. I had an Oops moment after I posted, thinking it would be nickel, so it's interesting to know that the nickel is mostly copper!

I am a sucker for these coins that have 'leftover' dirt but still have a lot of detail. IMO, it gives the coin character, nice one!

I like how the dirt outlines the design. Nice type coin!
