How are those polymer notes working out? Do they hold up well?

Yup. Tear resistant but once there is a tear they go fast.
I think every Canadian tried to rip one when they first came out.

Hold up? They are held difficultly because they slip too much between fingers. But in a larger sense, they are quite resistance to many more things.

When the polymer $50s came out, I heard of a friend who left one on her car's dashboard on a hot day and it melted. I guess extreme cold and heat aren't good for them. However, it solved the problem of paper notes just ripping in half from being used so much.

Sorry, but why would someone leave money on their dashboard?

One problem is that it's inadvisable to stuff a bill in your pocket the way one could with the old paper money. If you stick your hand in your pocket and it sticks to your hand, goodbye. They also don't fold very easily unless you crease it hard. It sort of forces one to carry a wallet or moneyclip.
