So about an hour ago I walked into the Fulton Savings Bank up here in Central New York, and wanted to get a roll of quarters for my son for his birthday. I asked to buy a roll of quarters and the teller told me she couldn't unless I had an account. Maybe I live under a rock, and maybe I do most of my banking at the ATM, but I'm 59 years old and have been around the block to more than one rodeo. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. I can fully understand not accepting rolled change without an account, but not being able to buy change with cash is what? I'm at a loss for words. What is the world coming to? Backwards and upside down? I know you guys will know if this is common policy these days.

This bank probably does not accept rolled coin, either. It does cost money to get rolls (from Loomis, Brinks, etc).

I think the issue is more that they need to track where the money coming in comes from. if you perhaps got a fake bill, it would show up down the road. I get that 1 roll is not a big deal, but I guess as they say policies are policies.

The teller was most likely trained for a similar situation, in which the money was "dirty"... well anyways there protecting themselves from money laundering.
Say a drug dealer walks into a bank and with the "dirty" money he buys a box of half dollars. He has no account so if later down the road they find out he spent "dirty" money for "clean" money anonymously the teller might get fired.

My bank will let me order as many coins as I want. I have a BofA account and I can walk across the street to a Wells Fargo and they will sell me rolls there (I have had a pretty decent silver score there over the summer). I have found though, that the tellers are much more likely to give you coins if you have an account with them though.

Post 9/11 At some banks today, you aren't allowed to deposit cash into another's account either. Doesn't matter if you have an account at that bank.
They are too greedy and taxpayer bailouts weren't enough. I was so fed up with their pranks and fees that I cancelled all five of my remaining accounts recently.

jbuck nailed it. I don't get why so many have a hard time understanding about the concept, and then publicly complain about it. Banks are not there to service your collecting needs/wants for free. Neither are other retail outlets that do a lot of cash transactions. If you're not a customer at said bank, what service/favor do they owe you?

Go into any store and ask for the same thing. More often than not you have to buy something to get change. No he didn't nail it! What expense? How much would it have cost them really? Bad PR will cost them much more....bad business decision. Businesses don't nickel and dime to make money. Guess you never had a business. I never, ever have been refused change in a bank. I guarantee you I can go the Walmart customer service desk, like I always do, and get change. They'll even sell me a roll of quarters. Yes they want me to shop there....good PR. Would it kill a bank to break a 10 spot? Bad PR. I'm not going back to that bank again and I will tell everyone I know that it stinks there. It's a lower tier bank anyway. Quote: If you're not a customer at said bank, what service/favor do they owe you? Whole point missed, they don't owe me anything...never did...never will. They will just have to continue to get customers on their good looks, I guess.

Quote: Whole point missed, they don't owe me anything...never did...never will. Then why complain? Just vote with your feet and never go there again. No need to whine about it when there are plenty of other places you can go for change.

That's exactly what I will do. No problemo. Just thought it was odd, so I thought I'd put it up for discussion here. Not whining. Whining would have a way different tone. Complaint yes. Discussion yes. Sorry you heard it that way. I knew this was a tough crowd for my topic, forbid anyone should criticize a bank on this forum, but I never shy away from a challenge. No hard feelings here. Maybe we can even still be friends.

Quote: I knew this was a tough crowd for my topic, forbid anyone should criticize a bank on this forum, but I never shy away from a challenge. Well, maybe surprisingly, I am not a fan of the banks. However, I understand what they are therefore never expect anything from them. For the record, I am a thirty year member of a Credit Union. Quote: Not whining. I re-read from start to finish and you are correct. Whining was a poor choice of words and I apologize. Quote: Maybe we can even still be friends. Never for one moment did I think we were no longer friends.

Quote: So, you expect them to take care of you at their expense? Banks are not a public service, they are a business. Why is that so difficult for people to understand? As a bank teller, I can tell you that NO ONE gets this. The bank is a for-profit business, with facilities to maintain and a staff to pay. Every roll of coin costs the bank money to have shipped in via the armored service (which is an outside company that also has to make a profit). Now if you were to come to me and ask for a roll or two of quarters, I would oblige without question. But as bank policies on this vary from one to the next (and even from one branch to the next of the same bank), many tellers are simply trying to do what is expected of them and not get fired.

Something happened along the way. I've had multiple accounts for years, and could order boxes of coin from banks that I held no account at. It wasn't an issue until the last couple years. Many banks sitting on piles of cash unwilling to loan, yet paying zilch in interest on savings. If I have thousands of dollars sitting in a savings account, why am I charged a monthly maintainance fee, when they already profit using my money?
