Hello all, been scouting this forum for a few years. Finally made a profile. Anyone else here from Michigan? I apologize early if I am posting in the wrong area.

I wanted to share some of my finds. Early on, I am noticing that I do not find any silver quarters or half dollars here in the state of Michigan. I am however finding a great deal of silver in dimes and War Nickels. Id really like to hear other stories from around my area if anyone has any?

What do you consider a "great deal"?
Do you search boxes, rolls, bags?

I have been searching, mostly dimes and nickels about a box or two of each a week. Its something to do while I go to school for my 2nd degree and while I'm not substitute teaching in the mean time. I usually find 1-2 silver dimes per box and 1-2 War Nickels per box. I haven't come across any V nickels yet though. I did find one Mercury dime though. I haven't found a single silver quarter though in 6 boxes, also no 40% silver half or 90% ones in 5 boxes. I search pretty much boxes, a few loose rolls. I've never gotten bags though. how about yourself, are you in Michigan>

hows that working out for you? :) I just went through 2 boxes of quarters, nothing. $390 in Halves, nothing, $100 box of nickels 2nd to last roll a 43 P war, and 2 boxes of dimes, 3 silvers a 59, 46, and a 57. I think we are an average state as far as silver goes. I have yet to find a quarter or half in my change. one mercury so far, and 12 or so buffalos. I found a 1920 D a while back ago, that is supposedly worth around $50 or so but condition wise I doubt its worth anything close to that. How about your finds? Anyone else from Michigan here. Nice to meet ya john

Im from Oakland County. I have had pretty good luck with all denominations of coins in my area. While I am usually a copper penny hoarder, I occasionally pick up boxes of halves with about a 80% success rate of finding at least one silver half.

Yeah I guess I will just have to keep on it then I guess. ;) I haven't had much luck just bad boxes I guess. I keep finding ones with black marks on them like someone inked them for no silver or something. Been a lot of fun so far though :)

Hi burt and welcome!
I'm in Mich and here has been my experience over six years -

Halves, hit hard. I was hitting halves in '08 and finds were great!
Last four years, not so great.

Quarters - 1 per $700.
I lost interest in nickels.
Dimes - where it's at!
I had a nice 6-year run, and quit recently due to increasing fees.

Dimes, 1 keep per $150, Barbers, mercs, old Canadians (200 or so), and proof clad and silver. I established relationships with several banks and searched $2-$3k in cwr rolled dimes, from bags I bought ready to be shipped out. I re-rolled after saying I'd never do it, but it's fast.

Glad to hear you're carring the torch.

In addition, if you like coins, consider dirt fishing.

I've had great success here digging coins that i'd never imagined possible, silver dollars, seated silver, (hundreds of silver), coins 250+ y.o., it's a total blast!

Michigan is full of parks and history dating way back

Yeah its an old hobby of mine I used to do a lot when I was in my early teens but stopped after my parents passed on and had some family troubles. I'm married now and getting back into old hobbies. Yeah... I think I am going to stick with the dimes and some nickels. Do heavily worn buffalos that I vinigerize have any value even if I bring the dates out? I mean I'm sure the shape of them is prolly at best Good or Poor. Ill have to post some of them on here. I actually have a history degree, lol going back though for a degree in criminal justice, need to pay the bills. Right now I dump at team one credit union its free there and they have a change counter. I get my coinage through first merit now, they are great. Do you mean dirt fishing as in metal detecting

Dateless buffalos usually get dumped by me, in fact, I dump a lot of coins like common Indian Head cents, to spur other collectors, 'cause that's important to me.

And yes dirtfishing, as in metal detecting.

wow that's pretty crazy :) especially in our smaller town atomosphere. I used to go to a place often called Columbus coin and Jewelry quite a bit. His name was john I believe as well. This was when silver was way down, like $4.00 an ounce. I am 28 now, I think I started this when I was 12. Ill have to start posting pics on here
