In a big chain pawn shop today, I was shown a couple of ziplock bags of Franklin halves. Mostly circulated, a few that looked AU at worst and might have been worth picking up, but for an employee having acid tested them - every single one! Most spots almost dime sized. All "junk" silver now....

Or you could weigh them. At least it wasn't two bags of Capped Bust halves, which I have the feeling they would've done the exact same thing to.

You could have messed with them, give each one a ring test. And make 2 separate piles, 1 large and 1 small. Then ask how much they want for the ones in the small pile and say you weren't interested in the large pile.

HA HA.

At least this doesn't happen in every pawnshop. About 20 miles from my home there is one where employees are very intelligent.

His loss.
Tell his boss that he could have done a comparative ring tone test of them, one against another.
They are probably only worth melt anyway, In which case I wouldnt have bothered with them myself unless I could have had them at 90% of spot value.

If they ARE worth melt only SOMEONE has to pay for the refining of the silver out of them!

For me, Frankins are only of numismatic interest in MS60 or better grades.

does acid test silver content? I haven't heard of that where I live, all our coins pre-1947 have silver content so I don't think we need to use it.

I hope that they didn't acid test their other silver coins like Morgans.
How much were they selling them for?

They were at about $1 apiece over current melt. The better ones would've been fine at that price if they hadn't been needlessly damaged. As I said above, this was an employee who wasn't exercising any common sense, and supposedly has now been set straight. Still indicative of what can happen when people who don't understand coins handle them.

Not so long ago, I got to look at a group of "Cap & Rays" 8 reales coins that had been brought ino a coin shop after the inheritors "cleaned 'em up" using a buffing wheel. Really sad.

What kind of moron in a pawn shop doesn't know to scratch the item onto a touchstone? How lazy can one be... and wasteful. I hope his fingers turn yellow for life.
