I have never seen an example of railroad rim so perfectly around the coin like this is, so it makes me think that the coin was altered, any way to verify? If it is legit, then we have the RPM as a bonus.

It looks like it was in a bezel at one time and I think it is an RPM.

Makes perfect sense John, not sure why I always forget about the coins altered by jewelery makers, I guess that I want it to be a real error coin. thank you!

I tried to pick out a matching Mint Mark from the Coppercoins site but I gave up -- started to get a headache from squinting. But if you have the inclination, you might find that you have a variety there, so maybe still a decent (though damaged) find.
