I've Googled around but so far have not come up with this medallion. Translates roughly to Confraternity (Religious/charitable brotherhood) of St. Marta in Venegazzu, Italy. Santuario Beata Vergine Addolorata

dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows

Any one have any ideas?

My suggestion is to contact http://www.antenati-italiani.org/pa...ta_2207.html
Which is "Parrocchia di Sant'Andrea apostolo e Santa Marta in Venegazzù di Volpago del Montello", the parish where the medallion probably came from - hopefully the relevant documents haven't been lost.

Thanks Medieval.

7 sorrows of the Virgin Mary being invoked against cholera.

I have sent an email to them - will report back once I receive a reply.

I have seen several medals like this but not Italian. Cholera was one of the nasties that reared its head every couple of decades or less throughout Europe in the 19th century. I have seen english and German, or Dutch, medals imploring some saint or 'Lady of Sorrows' to protect us from Cholera. They were like St. Crhistopher medals. You could get them just about anywhere. Not sure how much info would have been recorded on their manufacture etc.

They seemed to fade away a bit after someone invoked 'Our Lady of Public Sanitation' or the patron saint of clean food handling.
