I was just on ebay and for some reason decided to search roman coins, I discovered roman coins were actually mostly not too expensive so I decided to randomly bid on an auction that was ending soon and ended up spending about $10 including shipping for these 4 coins

well so far what I think I know about them is that the bottom right one is bronze, the others are copper?
i think the top right one a coin of Constantine commemorating the foundation of Constantinople? when I tried googling it I found one with a pretty similar design http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...IC_092_S.jpg

anyone know anything more about them, are they real, who do they depict, anything else?

I remember when I first went on ebay just a few years ago and was surprised ancient coins were affordable. My avatar coin was my first purchase.

you are correct about the commemorative coin, it's a nice one with good details. minted in cyzicus if I remember my mint marks correctly.

your top left con is a gallienus "zoo" coin honoring the goddess Diana, this page is a better source of info than I am...

http://www.lunalucifera.com/zoo/dia...ntelopeGamma

the bottom two are of the "victory advancing left" type, the one on the right is valens for sure, the one on the left I also think is valens.

I like that commemorative coin. It has a very attractive patina.

All four of the coins are bronze; actual copper ancient coins are pretty rare.

I don't see any reason to doubt the authenticity of any of the four.

Isn't it great that these wonderful pieces of ancient history are affordable?

to the community and to Ancient coin collecting.

For your first few ancients you didn't do bad at all.

Welcome arnoldoe

Nice first step into ancients.

I think your commemorative is RIC VII Cyzicus 93, SMKG. A nice example from the gamma officina of Cyzicus is not all that easy to find.

Yes 'arnoldoe', many of the reverses of LRB (late Roman bronze) are common, they were minted in various mints over several years in many mints by several officinae (ie workshops). Yours is from the third (Gamma) workshop of the Cyzicus mint (SMK).
But the clue to the attribution by 'Doucet' is the obverse legend. Yours has the legend "CONSTAN" break "TINOPOLI" and while your specific coin is not listed on Wildwinds in http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...tives/i.html there is an RIC 93 D having that obverse and your reverse (except that the officina letter is Delta [ie workshop 4] rather than Gamma).
Hope that this all doesn't confuse you too much, it takes some time to get used to all the details.

Postscript:

So, the detailed RIC number for your coin would be RIC 93 G - but Sear#16477 will do just as fine.

Yep, probably hundreds of thousands and no two alike. These are a pretty common type, although some mint marks are more scarce than others and a few are nearly impossible to find.

In the most recent pic you posted all coins are from Cyzicus and there are two coins from the same workshop as your coin (known as the 3rd or gamma officina. One from 2nd workshop, two from the 6th and two I can't quite tell.

A link to one of Victor's pages http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/comm/

You'll find a useful commemorative spread sheet here....http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm

Here is my example from the 3rd officina of Cyzicus.

Midieval is correct, Wildwinds doesn't show an example of 3rd workshop from Cyzicus. I don't know why, maybe they haven't got around to it.

The difference between RIC VII Cyzicus 92 and 93 is 93 is a pearl-diademed helmet and and 92 is laureate. I thought the OP coin looks pearled and my coin laureate. I could be wrong.

Wildwinds rely on gaining access to a picture, since you have a nice example e-mail the pictures of yours with a relevant text and agreement to publish it to Dane Kurth - his e-mail is hidden in the small print (middle line of the second last block) on the home page.

Yes, you are right - found out when I opened earlier her recent e-mail in which she told me her maiden name and gave a link to her fan club from her motorcycle racing days
She is a pretty busy lady, so please don't anyone bother her with questions for identification/attribution or similar - but she is quite happy to receive corrections or similar, ie everything which makes Wildwinds an even better site.

Beautiful coins - especially the commemorative one. And I see you already have one a link to one of the best websites available. From one newbie to another - welcome to the hobby. Saying 'have fun' is redundant as I can't imagine anything better.
