Since I started studying Greek coins there have always been three types that have always drawn my eye due to eye appeal alone. The tortoise of Aegina, the owls from Athena, and the Boeotian shields from Boeotia. Something about the simplicity of the design (the owl is a little busy, but I'll give it a pass) has just always appealed to me.

I've always kept a bit of on eye out for them despite them being generally out of my price range, so when I saw a Boeotian hemidrachm that I could afford from a reputable dealer I had to jump on it.

Just-Have-To-Show-This-One-Off

Silver Hemidrachm, 2.69 g. Obverse: Boeotian shield. Reverse: Kantharos; Thyros above, ivy leaf at r.

Attributed by dealer as SNG Copenhagen 175.

Minted in Boeotia between 379-371 BC.

I'm not thrilled with the pictures yet but these are the best I've gotten so far. It really is elegant in hand.

Amazing coin, if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it?

Around $150. It's smaller than the drachms you usually see in museums (14.5 mm), but more than big enough to get the impact from the design.

Chuy - I couldn't agree more. Your thoughts echo mine. I gravitated quickly to those three coins purely because they 'grabbed' me as I went past.

I have one of each and I will die happy.
(I like your Boeotian coin.)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets something from those designs. I expect I'll add the other two someday. I've almost bought a couple of the Aegina coins but I'm holding out for one that's in at least decent quality that I can afford. Coin collecting really is a waiting game.
