Which of the following in your opinion would be the lowest grade a split band merc can get?

Good question, I guess it would depend on the strike, but I'll defer to the more experienced. I don't see why you couldn't have an AU55 with FSB.

I agree with Ed. I think an FSB can circulate enough to to get down to AU without affecting the FSB.

It is a good question. At coin shows I've seen Mercury dimes in 2x2's with a designation of AU-50 and a statement of FSB. The obverse can be fairly poor but the reverse can be actually great. Not sure how that could happen from normal wear but I've seen them. I would think that all Mercury dimes would be at least a MS grade to have FSB's though. However, I've seen many of them with MS-65 or higher grades without FSB's. Note that is one of the biggies about the 1945. Although one of the largest quantities Minted for Merc's, at well over 159 million, only about 2% ever came out with FSB's from the Mint. Some of the other years are almost as bad. I'm working on trying to have a complete set of all FSB's now. Only 5 more to go.

AU55 is probably the lower limit at which you'll still see FSB's with any commonality.

I have never seen any FB mercs below MS-63. The bands are one of the first things to wear down in circulation so they would have to be at least MS IMO.

You can find many AU FSB Mercs in the Heritage archives.

Not for any lack of proselytizing on my part.

I can clearly recall a couple of years back when you reluctantly started to give away diagnostics to me on a JR-5 versus JR-7 reverse and the suggested internet usage led to Heritage which truly gave nice clear images of the variety and its what trained my eye to it at this point. HA is a must-stop on the Numismatic Highway of Research.

Not to go sideways here, but I agree that the Heritage Archives is an awesome data source, and their great software makes it a snap to access. I use it to check comp. sales whenever I consider a significant purchase.
