I'm picking up some 60's era silver proof-like sets. Truthfully I don't know much about Canadian coins. I noticed many of the 50s sets are worth like 20x what the coins would be worth on their own. However it seems like the 60's coins are worth more as individual coins (i.e. 1965 PL set is often about $20 and a 1965 dollar is about $15 on its own, 50c is $10).
I guess I had planned to cut these out of the cellophane as I'm not a fan of it as a presentation material. However, seeing the value of the 50s sets has made me pause and wonder if I should leave it intact. What do you do with your sets? Edited by tkbslc 10/30/2014 01:43 am

The first sets issued in the mid 50's were VERY low mintage compared to the later sets in the 60s. Generally the common silver sets go a bit over melt. If you have some nice ones and get them graded you can do better. Personally I prefer to keep the sets together and use the 4 pocket 3-ring binder pages to display them.
Year Mintage 1954 3,000 1955 6,300 1956 6,500 1957 11,862 1958 18,259 1959 31,577 1960 64,097 1961 98,373 1962 200,950 1963 673,006 1964 1,653,162 1965 2,904,352

Yes. The overall plastic size is the same, they just make the pouches within the plastic a bit bigger/smaller as they add/remove a coin.

No matter what, it's good that you picked up the silver sets.

Yeah, after receiving them, these are among my favorite coins in my collection. The young queen design and the light cameo finish with the frosty silver is just really nice to look at. The Voyageur design is a classic, as is the coat of arms on the 50c. What's crazy is that for many of the 60's years, you can get a PL set for about the same price as a PL dollar separately. I paid $20 for the 1966 set and I can't find a Proof-Like dollar separately for less than $25 shipped on ebay right now.

Wow, where are you finding the sets so reasonable. I keep seeing the 60's era sets for $30 and up plus Shipping. I'd like to get some for under $25. These sets are a brilliant find and I often wonder what the Mintage is after people selling them to melt.

Well keep in mind I'm talking US dollars, so it's more like $23 Canadian. I don't know, every week I seem to find one or two for pretty cheap Buy it Now on ebay (Admittedly only for 2-3 weeks now that I've been looking). Last week I got the 1966 for $19.87. Today I just got a 1967 and 1965 for $18.87 each! Admittedly the 1967 has some potentially ugly toning and is in a junky plastic holder, but I couldn't pass up a full 1967 set for a dollar over melt! Now I need a 1964 and I might be able to find a 1963 for cheap, but they are not going to be close to melt for those lower mintage years before that, I'm sure.
