Hi all, first time post here. I'm attempting to attribute a Wu Sangui cash coin using Hartill and am having some difficulty finding a good match. I've attached a side-by side image of the closest match but note the differences in the top character and the top of the tong (right character). The top portion of the tong is rather tough to see in the photo so I drew it in.

The coin was originally purchased in Vietnam, but the weight matches what would be expected of an authentic Chinese issue. Any input would be much appreciated.

the character at the bottom seem to not match either.

Just from judging from some of the Japanese coins I have, I would say it's a match. Sometimes the molding of the coins aren't spot-on on each coin so there can be small differences.
Sometimes a line will be smaller or longer than it is suppose to be or thicker or thinner.

All the characters match. It's a bit hard to see the tong because you've put red on it but I say it's the same character. I read Mandarin, as long as you don't give me the cursive one.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm still relatively new to cash coins so its good to know that there is some variation.

My only remaining reservation is that there appear to be other varieties in the catalog (Hartill) that exhibit some of the the exact character variations mine does. While these coins are more similar in some ways, the bottom character of 21.85 is distinctive compared to the others and matches mine.

It seems odd to me that features distinctly depicted on other coins would be within the range of normal variability, but like I said I am new to this.

I have Hartill's "Early Japanese Coins" & it's not a lot of fun trying to tell the difference between each coin with the varying characters.

Don't worry too much about the variability on some characters, especially coming from any of the Yunnan mints. Yes, mints. There were a few mints in operation in Yunnan at this period, usually located near the various copper mines.
21.85it is, unless there is anything on the reverse - li or yun.
For more detailed variety typing than Hartill, use the Daxi or Daji (two separate works, both in Chinese). Hartill suffices for most coins though.
