I have not yet got a camera that has the capacity to take close-ups of my coins. I just acquired this amazing 1837 capped bust half dollar - Lustrous white, well struck AU58 on which I cannot find ANY wear, in an NGC holder - - and I would love to show it to you. But, alas, I can't because I don't have a good camera.

Depending on the price, I may get one, but I don't know which one. A friend of mine from work paid over $2000 for his new camera, and if that's what it costs, I won't be getting one.

So I'd love to hear your advise and experience. Thanks.

Look at what ZacharyCash has been able to achieve with his Canon S5-IS, a $350-400 camera. I've got the S3 IS, just not Zach's talent.

I'd love to see pics of you bustie!

Stephen, I would refer you to the Coin Photography forum, where we've discussed this topic to tatters.

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...?FORUM_ID=81

It's not discussed to death, because there are always new additions to the list of "known good" cameras. In a nutshell, you can achieve results on a par with anyone, anywhere, for an investment of slightly over $1000. One member here is getting tremendous results with a $400 Canon S5 IS. That's all I'm going to say until you post in the Photography forum.

I'm going to leave this thread here for a bit, in the hopes of referring a few new members into the Photography forum.

I know I have said this many times but I paid like 25 bucks for my camera on ebay, its a JVC 3.2MP camera and is nothing special like some people have here but it does well enough to get very close to the coin to show certain details and good enough to take a good shot of the whole coin if wanted. Like I said its not as complex as some others use but it seems to do just fine for what I am doing with it

What Bryan1315 said.
You can find digital cameras today for much, much less than what you think. For one thing, try Google and type in camera shows and your state. Possibly you may have camera shows in your area just like coin shows, gun shows, knife shows, etc. Arond me there is one a month, minimum. Just like at a coin show, you can buy, ask question, compare cameras of every type. This is also sometimes true at computer or electronic shows.
You could just as well do as Bryan1315 did. Many, many people have bought a camera they do not want due to complications, received as a gift, upgraded to a more impressive model and are selling one on ebay. Much, much better than spending a fortune on something to take a few photos.
Also, do as SuperDave has said and read, read, read about that subject.
