I love my Jefferson nickel set, and I had a blast putting
it together. I put together the set including "proof only"
coins. However we all know that this set is not comprehensive.

I have an idea that will cost me a little extra dough to
implement, but it will make the task of completing my Jeff
set much, much longer to do, thereby increasing the thrill
of the chase.

I want to buy a 1.25" Dansco binder, which can hold several
more pages than the 'off the shelf' Jefferson Dansco... then
fill that larger binder with dateless nickel pages.

Now I can build a truely comprehensive Jefferson nickel
collection.

I want to start it with a blank planchet error. (The ONLY
error I want in the book.) I want the collection comprehensive
as in dates, mint marks, finishes, and major varieties,
but without getting into errors or meticulous varieties.

In the end, I would have EVERY proof in the series, not
just the S mint proofs. I would have the brilliant proofs
along with the matte proofs, etc... I have done some figuring,
and this could be done within 8 or 9 pages, which the 1.25"
binders can handle.

Oh, and I would also have the SMS as well as business strikes
for the 65-67 years, and would have the business strikes,
as well as the mint set finish coins in the years 2005-2010.

Lots and lots of Jeffersons to keep me busy for years to come!

The complete Jefferson nickel Set (per PCGS) totals 304 coins; regular issues, satins, proofs, SMS and varieties.

There are a couple of toughies, both with a weight of "7";

That is PCGS's idea of a set. The good thing about coin collecting, is you can determine your own set.
Include or exclude coins as you see fit.

Thanks for the info!

And yeah.... My idea of a set won't match PCGS's idea of a set.
I see no need to go into repunched mint marks, over mints, and double dies.

I did the same with a Dansco 7070 Type Set. When making my Type Set, I believe I included 1-2 that Dansco didn't list, and excluded some varieties.

Of course PCGS is just one listing of coins available and you should tailor your collection around what you want to collect...that is why I collect "Types" instead of "Series".

Most of all having fun doing so!

I highly recommend the 65-67 SMS, the matte proofs and the 2005-2010 satin coins. They look great are fairly inexpensive with the exception of the 97 matte proof.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Those SHOULD be in
the Dansco album to begin with. I am also talking about
a set with EVERY proof in the series, and not just the
proofs in years that San Francisco didn't make a business
strike.

EVERY proof... No matter the mint. Brilliant or matte. 1938 on.
EVERY business strike.
SMS
05-10 Satins
No errors. No overdates. No overmints.

The only "varieties" I would like in the set are:
PPDS 1939 rev of 38
PPDS 1939 rev of 40 (Meaning a total of 8 1939 nickels!)
and the 79, 80, and 81 Type I and II proofs.

Should make a nice set, and fit within Dansco's thickest album,
with room to grow a few more years.

Always find it fun to try and get two of every coin, one to put in a mylar folder to preserve and the second to complete a book like you are doing.
