A small (~11mm) European medieval silver coin.
Anyone knows what it is?
Will give the answer later.

Hope I can tempt some to get interested in that field.

Could it be from Venice? Looks like the Venice lion.

It's not a lion, quite the opposite.
And no, it's not from Venice.
But glad that you not only looked but took a stab at it.

Actually I should have said Lamb not Lion. My only other guess would be some type of Papal coin.

Lamb, yes - 'Agnus Dei' ie Lamb of God.
While from a very Christian (as the reverse indicates) Kingdom (as the image of the king on the obverse indicates) it's not from the Italian region (including papal).

I guess that is a Paschal Lamb on the reverse.

You got my curiosity going with this coin. Not having any references of medieval coinage I've searched the web with no results. So I'mm itching to find out where it came from.

At least one persons curiosity has been awakened.

It is a Parvus from Charles I Robert, King of Hungary (1307-1342) minted in 1329

Obverse: King enthroned facing.
Reverse: +.M.R[EG]IS KARVLI around 'Agnus Dei'

Reference: Rethy Plate XXIII,17 / Huszar#471

His Denars have 'REGIS HVNGARIE' on the reverse, which would have been too easy.

Hungary was one of the first places I checked. Can you recommend a good reference book on Medieval coinage?

The two references I gave are the best I know for Hungarian coinage, namely
Ladislaus Rethy "Corpus Nummorum Hungariae" & Lajos Huszar "Münzkatalog Ungarn"
Don't know if there is a newer/better reference out there.
In the end the Fitzwilliam Museum series will probably become the standard work on medieval coinage I suppose.

Looking for Bela III just found the following downloadable pdf http://www.numismatas.com/Forum/Pdf...0Hungary.pdf
Doesn't have the Parvus in it but on the bottom of page 66 is the other coin I posted of Charles I Robert, the Denar with the ostrich head.
