I everyone, when I was first hoarding copper pennies, I was informed about the variation of the 1985 pointed 5, this was about 3 years ago or so. I have since found 4 of them, so I am quite lucky

1985-Penny-Pointed-5

I can see 2 markers that are different:

1) the blunt/pointed top
2) the angled transition to the bottom curve

My question is how did this happen? it would be pretty random for this to be some sort of die issue (cracks etc) also the image is too perfect in my opinion to be this.

Was there an actual different die made and used? I have not seen any discussion on this (if this has been discussed please link)

Also the best of my knowledge is that there is less than 1% of total mintage are pointed 5, does anyone have a better number?

Cheers

Pennyman, thanks for the article, so from his stats less than .01% of 771 772 500 so less than 80K of these, cool. { And less and less each day as they are melted by the mint}

Still, why would they make (and use) a second die? were the pointed 5's supposed to go into sets?

Thats a good article DBM, worth book marking.
Maybe that 5 was created with the collector in mind.

Yes these 1985 pointed 5 are very hard to find indeed! I think I have found about three, and I have 8 6 litre buckets full of canadian 1 cents! I am surprised there is not more demand for them!

They seem to sell on ebay pretty good, and fetch more than what is posted on the c&c website.
