Is it not the responsibility of the seller in essence to get the package to the buyer? I'm curious why some sellers will tell you that insurance is mandatory for items over a certain value. Plus, there are never insurance rates posted anywhere, just that it is required. I'm confused I guess.

This is a great question! Most sellers take the attitude that the coin is your responsibility as soon as they put it in the mail. I believed it until Bobby said it was the seller's responsibility to get it safely to you.

This is important to me right now because the double thaler I bought a few weeks ago ($600) has not arrived. The seller said it was shipped insured (with the PO insurance) on August 15th from NJ. Usually NJ to MA takes two days. I don't really want to wait eight months for the PO to process an insurance claim. I would like to get my money back now and let him wait for the PO to process a claim.

it is definately the sellers responsibility but when they say its mandatory its because they don't want a big hit coming out of their pocket (which is what will happen with a charge back from paypal if you didn't get the item). The seller will be the one getting the refund not the buyer so paypal will pay you (the buyer) and the seller will have to deal with the post office to get their money back

Which brings me to my question I guess in a round-a-bout way. If a seller states that insurance is mandatory over say $100, how do I know what I will be charged? Can I refuse insurance since it is the sellers responsibility? Do you just avoid folks that say that it is required? I'm curious if this is another way for sellers to make extra money, or if they're honestly trying to provide a service in which they don't know how it really works....

Hi Tigh

Next time your in the post office ask them for the insurance rates ,, it varies according to the estimated value of the package.

as long as your package arrives with an insured sticker on it the seller will not make much off of you for the insurance ,, what is really irritating is to pay for insurance and then not have it on the package.

I see the disclaimer on ebay auctions all the time ,, but when you file with pay pal, the seller has to be able to prove that you received it ,, packages sent without DC are a big mistake for the sellers who accept pay pal .
