Hello all,

I recently received this apparently ancient silver coin. It appears to be silver. It weighs 3.74g and is about the size of a nickel. Anyone have any ideas on what this is?

For some reason I am having huge trouble loading the photo of the other side. it has an urn on it.

Thanks!

Looks, to me, like a silver from Greek Ionia, Teos, with Griffon. Circa 6th to 5th century BC. Probably a drachm, but a bit light even accounting for wear.

We need to see the other side of the coin. If it has a quadripartite incuse square, then I would be more confident of this ID.

We also need to see a focused picture to be at all confident of authenticity.

Edit. Oops...scratch that. I just read that there is an urn, ?kantharos, on the reverse. ...could still be a similar ID though.

I'll try again. I am not sure if I can do much on the focus. Is this of any particular value?

Hi SCG. These new pics are fine enough, but I still can't find a match. My initial thoughts might have something, but you will need others' input I am afraid...

I think it could be a sphinx. Have a look at http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...chios/t.html

The "urn" is an amphora with volute handles, sometimes the word "krater" is involved.

Keep a note of this http://www.forumancientcoins.com/mo...lossary.html
It is handy to find the greek word for something when you are searching.

I only had a quick look and didn't see an exact match, but I think it is in the right area.
