It doesn't look like a contemporary counterfeit.
And from the rim size and quality I would tend towards a specimen copy for museums.
But there must be far more knowledgeable members in the United Kingdom forum -> http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...?FORUM_ID=36

Hope a moderator sees and moves this topic.

Why do you think it is counterfeit?

Did you mean low? I think halfpennies are around 10g.

That said (and admitting I'm no expert) it looks genuine to me.

I use the Krause books for specs on coins but I only have from the 1800s up. Looking online, I found a mention of 8 g. It is possible this is wrong, though. Can anyone verify weight on these? I'd be happy to find out this was an authentic coin.

10 Gr. Would be about standard for This issue....give or take. I see nothing that would imply yours is anything but a Regal issue.... really nice example!

Thanks, I am also suspicious because I bought it on ebay for $ 26 US from a seller who doesn't seem to deal in coins. I took it to a coin shop yesterday and they thought it might be authentic as well. The man there mentioned the metal separation on the upper reverse as indicative of age, thus pointing toward authenticity or at least a contemporary counterfeit.

These are not often counterfeited as far as modern copies go. So I wouldn't worry about that with this coin.

Contemporary counterfeits are just as collectible if not more collectible than regal issues.

If you compare this coin to a regal issue, it appears to be correct.

The condition is quite nice and I think for $26 you did well.

the famous "cartwheel" penny of 1797 weighed 28.5 grams.
Was 1774 a year in which pennies were minted ? There were large gaps in the series in that era.

Also, your coin is not denominated. The British did not introduce denominations until the farthing of 1799.
So, I'm wondering if yours might be a halfpenny.

Peter: Yes, this is a regal (genuine) halfpenny.
