Hello all, I have an interesting question in regard to the Canadian coin market , and it has a lot to do with sold out mint coins and such. When you watch the coin show on the shopping channel, it states how many coins and coin sets in which being purchased that very moment. In addition, they sell out quickly, is that because they market it well and pick what is hot? (so many sell)!! The Royal Canadian Mint is also interesting, because if the market is so slow and to be honest, in most parts of Canada, weeping. Then how come the coins are mostly sold out, and have a decent price tag to them. How come people such as Steven Bromberg state that "the market has never been better" and PCGS video market reports tend to be on the positive side? I understand that there are other things which contribute to this, such as the age of collectors and the new virtual world . However, I just wonder how a coin with 200000 as a mintage can sell out at the RCM. Have a great day all!

Quote: is that because they market it well and pick what is hot? That's it. Turn off your TV there's nothing to learn about coins there, rather marketing.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning... -from PCGS website

Maybe because Steven Bromberg and PCGS are interested in saying that so they make more money $$$$

The Shopping Channel may sell out the 50, 100 or so at a time, note he always says I tried to get more from the mint, so as to create the notion of demand, super fast sell out from the Mint, not always the case, he's been flogging the Dreamcatcher for two years. The savvy collector can see through the BS. In essence they lie so they can sell more, little overt lies that trick the viewer into buying, but isn't that marketing. Incent the purchase by showing the benefits, and being one of the few to own the coin is a benefit in the consumers mind.
So false demand plus consumer naïveté equals more sales.

I think it's also important to note that the people generally buying from Bromberg's show on TSC are compulsive couch potato shopping addicts who are not really collectors in the first place.

Kind of a generalization of an entire population of consumers. Not sure that their needs and wants are inferior to yours.

I have also heard through the grapevine that Bromberg's rate of customer returns from his home shopping club sales is very high.

I can't speak for the return rate but let me tell you, I went to an auction out in a horse barn once and this biddiot bid up a few nickel dollars to $50, a NFLD penny to $20 and a State Quarter set up to $80. When non collectors see things like coins are baseball cards and things packaged as "collector's edition" they go nuts thinking of it as an investment. Most of the Coin Show coins do not go collectors but to impulse investors...

SilverDon, I'm not saying TSC shopper's purchasing desires are inferior to mine or anyone else's. I'm simply saying they are generally not actual collectors; they are impulse shoppers who have virtually no regard for the true value of the stuff they purchase.....regardless of what it is.

Skip79, I concur. I don't know who but someone used the term "bidiots" on here and I latched on to it.

@ Skip79 There are many ways to buy coins. Those that have limited venues must resort to the Coin Show. It is just another storefront. If they collect, they are collectors, by definition. Their money is the same colour as yours. Shopping Channel doesn't care if you're a serious collector, nclt, decimal, bullion or whatever as long as they get people to enter the credit card number. Don't hate the players. They are part of the makeup of the people involved in the hobby, albeit for different reasons than yours obviously.

Actually the Shopping Channel is no different than any store. Retail outlets of any kind are full of people buying goods they do not NEED. I for one know Steve Bromberg and he is a pretty straight shooter in my books. At torex years ago he was buying stuff no one else would pay up for. In other words, good for business. About the coin market, surprise David Hall is right.............coin market the last five years has never been better.

So is the mint lying too about their mintage numbers that are all getting sold out, and keeping numbers for the large businesses like steven brombergs channel and J and M?

SilverDon, I'm speaking in regards to TSC's target market. There are hoarders and compulsive shoppers out there that TSC predominately targets as their customer base. Of course that's not absolute, but in a general context of who they typically target with their product shows. And in doing that, they extensively talk-up/market the benefits of each item they sell to fuel the instinctive and compulsive urges of that strategically defined customer base. That's all I'm saying.

Speaking strictly of the Canadian coin market, it's my opinion that prices you can get for your coins today, if sold on ebay to collectors or sold to dealers, are 10% to 30% DOWN from the peak of the coin market in 2006/2007. Conversely, selling prices at the peak was 80% to 100% of trends, while now, it's more like 50% to 70% of trends. Dealers at coin shows still asking 80% to 100% of trends are slowly collecting dust on their showcases. It is definitely a buyer's market.
