Hi John - have a look running from the R in AMERICA you can make out two fissures; one running on top through the O and last L in MONTICELLO and the second running through the E and the first L. These are a lot clearer in hand. Another fissure (or part of the same fissure) narrows as it moves across the Monticello and comes to a point by the left rim. The fissures rise and fall with the details/devices on the coin. I initially thought PMD, but the pits look scalloped and some of the delamination appears attached, especially the divot on the left hand side of the Monticello. I'll try to take a couple extra pics - it was getting late when I posted these.
Hi John - I'm in the same spot. I took some extra pics but in the middle of assembling a desk for my son (honey-do-list has to take precedence for the moment). Thanks for the extra look. The spots on the upper rim look PMD with a possible exception of the one at 10ish. Either burnished material or perhaps attached lamination. Kevin
I feel this is a lamination error. Note on the RI on AMERICA you can see a fain design of these devices. If this were PSD they would have been totally removed from a hit. They are in a straight line across the reverse.
Thanks coop. I saw that too and thought evidence of the device would normally be destroyed. I took additional pics but didn't have time to upload. Maybe later when I get home.
