http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-D-MECU...331385770044I have been looking a tons of 1916-d online before I make a purchase. does anyone know how many different the mint mark locations / dies where used. so for fun I been trying to detect real ones versus fake/altered I believe this one to be fake. But I just want to double check to make sure I was right in my conclusion. besides private auction - red flag and old reviews of counterfeit coins This one I assume has altered mint mark that is chased? below is a real mint mark notice the triangle like inside below another real one with MD also has triangle inside and same mm location.

A high value coin not in a TPG holder = red flag

Also note that the inside of the "D" on the fake is even BUT outside there are bunches of die scratches. That could not happen (and I'm not even going into the source of the die scratches).

It is also not in the right position. It's a little too low.

Quote: It is also not in the right position. It's a little too low. However, remember that back then the mint mark was put on separately. And if that Mint worker had a liquid lunch, the Mint Mark could be almost anywhere. That 16D and the 1909S VDB Cents are the most counterfeited coins on Earth, I think. I purchased a 16D Merc, not long ago for $5. And it looked as good as any I've ever seen. A dealer at a flea market was selling those and many other faked coins. I really liked his 1943 Copper Cent but someone else got that one. He suddenly vanished lately. I really think anyone buying a 16D Merc not in a slab is really just taking a chance. And a poooooooor one too.

Interesting how the seller only sells tools, rare currency errors an 1916-D dimes and 1909-S, 1909-S-VDB, 1931-S, and 1914-D LWCs and 1909-S IHCs. All red flags in my opinion, including the harsh way the seller treated reports of counterfeits in his feedback, which I will not show here to keep this site family friendly.

I always buy my Mercs PCGS/NGC graded & slabbed from reputable dealers. There is nothing as bad as buying a fake coin and paying top dollar for it.

I need a 1916-D for my Dansco album. My plan is to find an affordable AG in a reputable TPG holder and crack it out. No way will I buy this coin raw and I also plan on inspecting the TPG holder VERY carefully for signs of tampering. If you buy it slabbed Ocala, give that holder a REAL good inspection and verify its serial number with the TPG.

That's a fake, search the internet and find out what the triangular shape of a real 16-d should look like

Private auctions = red flags Bad Feedback = red flags High dollar coins that are not TPG'd = red flags Bottom line? Don't buy high dollar unslabbed coins off of ebay.
