Hello community, I found this while roll hunting up in Vancouver Canada. I was unsure at first of what it was however I knew it was not my regular beaver looking at me.

Liberty-Nickel?-In-A-Canadian-Nickle-Roll?-Say-What!

Liberty-Nickel?-In-A-Canadian-Nickle-Roll?-Say-What!

I believe this is an 188? I cannot make out the last digit, or most of the reverse.

I know there is one year that did not have cents on the coin, and this is worth a lot.

Any thoughts on this coin? can I restore the date somehow?

Cheers

In the condition this coin is in, the only date that would make it worth any decent amount would be an 1885 ($30 to $50 if your lucky). It might be possible to restore the date through the use of an etchant, ie high acidic vinigar or nic-a-date solution (ferric-chloride).

The 1883 first was made without the words 'CENTS.' It is much more common than the 1883 with 'cents.'
I will guess your example an 1888.
I would not try to restore the date. There used to be a product called 'Nic-O-Date' which
would eat away at the metal until a date showed.

Given the look of the coin, I'd say it was buried for many years, then a metal detectorist dug it and put it back in circulation.

Neat find given you are in CAN!

White vinegar for a slow etch or 50/50 vinegar and hydrogen peroxide (about 15 minutes and you should watch it closely in order to etch until a digit is legible). Stop the etch once you see the number; still will be a pickled nickel, but you will be able to establish what you have there. Do this only after you are satisfied that you can't figure it out through other means. Good luck!!

Wow, some people list things like this as uncirculated on ebay. Just having a humorous moment, but interesting find in Canada. Think of its history, not the value.
