When I take my American change across the border the teller runs a magnet over it to make sure nothing sticks (magnetic Canadian coins).

I took apart my old broken record speakers for copper and kept the magnets.

To pick out American and silver coins could I not buy some dimes and pull out all the zinc dimes and then sort out the Canadian nickel, American and any silver?

Anyone do this?

The only time I've used a magnet roll hunting, is to check the 1968 Canadians for the 50% silver, although I can usually tell just by the patina. I used to get hundreds of Canadian dimes in my US rolls.

You see it more with nickels (used to be pennies) over here. I like to have a couple hundred bucks in American for Maine coin shows and you also can't buy MD 20/20 in Canada.

Do you think the idea would work though?

I took apart a hard drive for the magnet and set up a copper/zinc separator.
I roll a coin down the 2 yard tube and the magnet at the end (not due to magnetism)
slows down depending on metal. The sorter broke recently tough. :(
