Hey guys, I branched out into US classic coins (2 cents) and want to a get into Medieval.
I love the look of the Sasanian fire alters, I can read Arabic script, I love the Allahu Akbar marks stamped on the coins and am teaching myself about the different monarch's crown.
Living in a town of 912 people ancient coin stores (coin stores in general) are non existent so I was wondering if anyone can point me towards articles on Sasanian coins, dealers with an online preciense or people on here looking to trade/sell.
If Sasanian coins are too obscure could you guys direct me in a different path.
Thank you so much!

OK, thank you Valecrucis. I see the domain was sold, hence the way back machine. I will have to google how to copy and past with an Android!

Each seller accepts different payments, most accept Debt cards. The site Val post works but not by using the link you have to type in the address.

Yes, I know about the link. Am I right in assuming all the coins on vcoins are legit? I have seen it come up in a lot of threads on here. Sorry about seeming so numb, I have never tried to get into medieval before.
Post script, would a silver drachm collection featuring one of every monarch be considered a "date set" of sorts?

I would advise to get a good reference book on Sassanian coins, if that is your area of interest. I think that a good reference book by Sellwood would be a good start. I have a copy. Perhaps you should email one of the major numismatic dealers to see if than procure a copy for yourself. That is how I got mine. Local municipal libraries will not have such a specialist book.
I say 'I think', because I can't find it just now, the reason being that my house is being re painted and re carpeted at this pont in time. I have about 30 boxes of books pack away, and four of those boxes contain my numismatic reference books.

Ya. I work in a municipal library and my province has nothing on Sassanian. I go two towns over to attend an American/Canadian collector club and I will ask around.
Right now I am looking at how to store, grade, price, tell if it is genuine, etc.. It is like I am 6 again! In a way I love and hate it.
Get one I can online for free, buy a book then look for a $40-$80 coin to get my feet wet.
Does anyone on ccf collect Sasanian? For some reason I think their is a lad from the Emirites, Abu Dhabi that does.

Quote: I work in a municipal library Don't know how it works in Canada, but here in Australia there is an exchange programme some public and the university libraries have, which allows to access any book in their collections (either for borrowing or some only for reading in the library). There is a nice book from Sellwood et al "An introduction to Sasanian coins" which unfortunately is out of print and seemingly difficult to get second hand, the only one I could find by googling is on Vcoins for US$100 but maybe you can get one cheaper. Also, there are a few here on this forum who have some Sasanid coins

I love Sassanian Coins!! By default, when I became interested in Sassanian coins I realized that Khusro II coins are very common from made from many different mints, available in high grade and made of fine silver. Historically he lived at a pivotal moment in human history. He was one of the major Heads of State in the world at the time, and thus received a letter from Muhammad, suggesting he acknowledge the one true God, Allah....or else. He is an emperor of biblical perportions. Why not start with him? Cheap, high grade, historical...what more could you want? Now if you wanted to start spending you could get a Khusro II (type) coin that is inscribed with Arabic and this represents some of the earliest Islamic coinage in the world. Are you sure that you want collect Sassanian coins? Or Sassanian style coins? How do you want to collect? Do you want one of each ruler, or one of each type? Or just the "good" guys? This is one of my favorite coins and it is not Sassanian but it is made in Sassanian style. VasuDeva of Zabulistan Turko-Hephthalite Hunnic Afghanistan Circa 680-738 AD Dated yr 65 of PYE or AD 697 AR Drachm Senmerv Crown Type. Tri-lingual. Nezak (Nspk) Huns Kingdom of Zabul Vakhu (Vasu)-Deva, Sub-ruler of Shahi Tigin Ref. Göbl Hunnen Em. 244 31.8 mm x 3.28g. Die position=12h Obverse: Bust of Vasu Deva right in Persian style. Bull head above crown ; 'thunderbolt' countermark, Gold plug countermark. Brahmi legend in field. Cursive Bactrian Greek Legend around. Reverse: Zoroastrian fire altar and attendants. Pahlavi legend in fields, Cursive Bactrian Greek Legend around. Note: Holed. Gold Plugged in antiquity.

Probably the best ancient coin businesses in Canada is Calgary Coin, in Alberta. If they don't have a good starter reference book on Sassanian coins for sale, they should be able to get one for you, or at the very least, steer you in the right direction.

In the course of collecting Sassanian coins. I made a point to seek out a nice example of the very scarce Ardashir I Billon tetradrachm made in the earlier Parthian Style. The later I had an opportunity to score him drachm (Sassanian Style) Persia, Sassanian Empire Ardashir I (224-242 AD) Billon (Also described as Potin) Tetradrachm 25.6mm x 11.19g Ctesiphon mint Obverse: Pahlavi legend, "MaZDISN BaGi ARTaHShATER MaLKAN MaLKA AIRAN" (of the Worshipper of Mazda, the Divine Ardashir, King of Kings or Iran); cuirassed bust of Ardashir right with long beard, Parthian-style headdress with ear flaps; Reverse: Pahlavi legend, "NURA ZI ARTaHShaTR" (Fire of Ardashir), fire-altar without attendants ref: Göbl II/5 and the drachm... Ctesiphon, Iraq Ardashir I (b.180-242 AD d.)(r.224-242 AD) Ar Drachm 24.6 mm x 4.13 grams Obverse: Cuirassed bust of Ardashir I right in Parthian Headdress. Fyi, Zach "Beast" Beasley has a decent Sasanian page here: http://www.beastcoins.com/Sasanian/Sasanian.htmRegarding the grifterrec.com site (The Coins and History of Asia): Alfred de la Fe is working to launch it again, hosted by Coinproject.com. He says it'll be uploaded soon, all pages intact. He is working hard, he says, "editing the old HTML, cleaning up old coding and changing old (dead) links." I know everyone of us on this thread will be happy to see the fully functional version of Tom Mallon's site available again. Hopefully there are no snags along the way to Alfred's relaunch.

Thank you all so far!
Libraries in my province swamp books all the time but not 1 good book avalible.
As for Sasanian or Sasanian style what I want is to be able to tell a story. I want to be able to show all the difference rulers, the Zorostian fire temple, the Islamizization of Persia and how it affected both the west and the east, etc..
If I do take off in this I suppose I would brance out in the other empires.
Can someone recommend a good entry level coin to hop into what I want to build?
