Quote: how it affected both the west and the east, etc.. If I remember right, 'Ancientnoob' made a topic in that vein not that large ago. Quote: Can someone recommend a good entry level coin to hop into what I want to build? Any of the large drachms would be a good start imo, coins of Khusru II are quite common and easy to find. Here another ruler, also quite common: AR Drachm Year 16 (472+) of Peroz (457-484) minted in Isfahan - Sellwood Type 2 / cf.Mitchiner#985 Obverse: 'KADI PIRUCHI HALKA' around bust of Peroz Reverse: '16' left and 'AS' right of fire altar with two attendants

OK, I will start sacing some trees. I will start with Calgary Coins and Vcoins. I am actioning some stuff off in June. Do ancient guys tend to be in to modern too? I have a single ancient and s rap silver etc. And I might see if I can thin out some impulse buys into something worth wild.
Can't wait to start digging on here for more info on the coins AND the people.

Quote: Do ancient guys tend to be in to modern too? That depends on the person. Some focus on a specific series, time frame, region or similar while others like a wide range. Personally I started with modern (aka post 1800) world coins (and I still like to fill some gaps, like one coin each from the newer countries) but my focus has shifted to ancient and especially medieval coins, still retain a liking for more modern non-milled coinage though.

Years ago I collected US and world coins, amassing a collection of thousands of coins. Than a number of years ago I sold off my collection and started to solely collect Ancients. An been doing so ever since.

May I ask what caused such a radical change? Was it student or an impifany of sorts to get into ancient collecting?
Also, I am using the term medieval correctly? I am not sure what to call these.

For me I've always been interested in history, what better coins to collect than the ones that were around when history was being made. I discovered Roman coins first, I would buy 1000 coin uncleaned lots. Back than they weren't expensive, now I can't afford them. It was a thrilled to take a coin that was buried for 1500 years or more clean it and reveal a beautiful coin that was hidden under all that dirt. Every time I would find another emperor or empress I would read about them and learn what role they played in history. Now I buy cleaned coins, but the thrill is still there whenever I add a new ruler to the collection. I since moved on to Greek, Indo-Greek and Eastern Empire coins and the learning continues.

OK, so I updated my want list, sent an email off to Calgary Coins and read all the links.
I don't know if the Kurso II prices are effected by the mint marks but I assume some would be more scarce and hence valuable.
If they can be had for about 30-40 USD I am getting excited. I have $20 American right now, an ancient I don't want and a boat load of silver. I might cold call some people on here and see if I can strike a trade.
May I ask what the key date wallet breakers are for this series?
Like most people I didn't even think ancients and medieval where available/obtainable to the common man!

Yes, I found a list of the rulers but on Beast's websites he talks about different mints, I would imagine with ancients (just like the modrens) the mint mark plays a big role?
I went back 8 pages echizento and the Sasanian thread and favorite cheap coin thread and all the other threads where you showed off your drachm was just great. Lovely coin.
I know I want a Khurso II to start off but should I specify a mint mark when looking on vcoin or ccf?

Anoob would be the person to ask about the different mints and there rarity. I haven't gotten that far along in my studies of these coins.

Quote: I know I want a Khurso II to start off but should I specify a mint mark when looking on vcoin or ccf? In my opinion it would be best to start with a coin which has good eye appeal and where the legends are complete and easily legible (with a clear date and mint mark). Once you are comfortable with the series go hunting for the more difficult stuff.

That is what I think I will do, something I can make out. I will see if anoob takes pm here in a minute.
One more quick question, is Sasanian ancient or medieval?

I PMed him earlier for you, he should be along sometime. It depends on who you ask. I would say late ancient, early Medieval. Others will have a different opinion.
