Hello. I have an 1882-S Morgan dollar and the mint mark is "off" a bit. Kind of looks like a O/S but not exactly.

It's like a bulbous "S" with the two ends of the letter almost curling back to its mid-section -- which would, in effect, make it look something like an O/S. But the ends don't go that far, so not sure what it is. Doubled? RPM?

Or it might be nothing, But it's not like most "S" mint marks I've seen.

I've posted a few photos. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

- Rob

Welcome Shenandoah1! It looks like a slight RPM to me, horizontally shifted just a smidge. It's easiest to see in your third picture. I have no idea whether this is a previously recognized RPM or how it might affect value.

It could be one of four VAM varieties, 17, 17a, 19, or 28.

Your pictures are a bit small, but my take on it is it's likely a LDS of an existing VAM based on the appearance of the reverse die being heavily polished down. The details of the wreath are very shallow.

Thank you for your response. I did look at the VAMs you mentioned before posting my question here. However, I believe all but one of those include a doubled date as one of their attributes. Since my coin's date doesn't appear doubled, I didn't think it could be any of those. Doesn't a coin have to have all of a VAM's attributes to be considered that VAM? Or am I mistaken? As for the one that is solely an S/S, with no date doubling, the mint mark in the example looks different than mine, though it's hard to tell exactly, of course. Obviously there's a certain amount of subjectivity, especially with the minor VAMs, so I'm trying to get as many opinions as I could to try to reach a consensus. Thanks again for your help.
