Sometimes I look around on shopgoodwill.com... The other day I found an auction for five 40% Kennedy's up for auction and they had them listed as .800 silver so I emailed them to notify them of their mistake and this is the response I got...

Dear shopgoodwill.com customer,

Thank you for your message. Please note the complete description in the listings that you refer to. Kennedy silver dollars minted from 1965-1970 are clad with .800 silver and .200 copper, over a .209 silver and .791 copper core. You are correct, the total composition when those values are combined is .400 silver and .600 copper. Thank you for your interest in our auctions. Scott Collectible Customer Service Goodwill Industries of the Columbia-Willamette Thank you for your support of our mission - providing vocational opportunities to those with barriers to employment.

So, are they right, or am I? If they are, it sounds to me that are somewhat misleading people to prop up the value of the coins...

Its kind of like how Liberty dimes are misnomers to Mercury. There was much confusion among coin enthusiast in 1970, as for the 5 previous years, these were often referred to as 80%, 80% clad. or just clad because that is how they were made. Commonly, as logic gave way, these came be known as 40%'ers as that was their composition, and we suddenly had a new clad. I used to spot 40% on the bay listed as 80%. They used to go for less than spot, because no one knew what they were. Now they go for stupid money if you see them, because Joe Blow doesn't know any better, nor the sense to ask. Good question.

That is backwards. The misnomer is Mercury for the Winged Liberty Head dime of 1916-45. The dime shows Liberty wearing wings on her cap which was meant to symbolize liberty of thought.

Actually few really care what you call them. Since the majority of people that say what they are call them Mercury dimes, it becomes like Kleenex. Or that famous thing on Wrigley Gum where some call it a spear and some call it an arrow. Wrigley doesn't care and Kleenex doesn't care as long as you buy them.
In the Red Book it states Mercury dimes as well as Winged Liberty Head. Does this mean they think Liberty has a winged head? And maybe she or he does. Not even sure anyone can prove if male or female. All my Albums say Mercury dimes.
And so why not restart what about PENNIES.
I wouldn't even have bothered Shopgoodwill about it. However, they do appear to think you did some research.

I have on a couple of occasion seen coins mislabeled and have emailed them about and they corrected it...

I didn't do any research... I just have never heard of 40% Kennedy's being referred to as .800 and thought it was a typo and wanted them to correct it...
